People will always have their opinions on what they feel was the best year for games. It's undeniable that 2004 is among the handful of golden years of games.
Personally it is my favourite year for games, absolutely adore several of the games you mentioned and it has my favourite game ever as well.

MGS3. Play through the game at least once or twice every year. At this point I don't even really play a lot of video games anymore but I always come back to MGS3. Such a fun package.

2004 just seemed like a really exciting time for video games. The excitement for the future of video games was great. The industry has gone through such crazy changes since then. Endless studios closing down, completely rethinking the business model of many games by way of DLC and season passes, a market where the major publishers are not able to take any risks on new IPs, the fans have to mostly rely on independent developers putting out the niche titles.
Gotta say the changes have been part of my declining interest in the industry.
