Playing games fast and effectively isn't bad, the problem is when they start trying to beat world world records that don't last more than a month and shit. I like watching speedruns and try to incorporate some of their tricks into my routes sometimes, but copying a run 1:1 and trying to beat it under a faster time just seems incredibly boring to me.

He streams games and it's hilarious. It's like his Second Life videos except hours long, just nonstop keks and lels. The only thing I don't like is when someone donates money to him and it shows an annoying gif on the screen with sounds and shit. I don't even read the chats.

It's like trying to draw a perfectly straight line or a perfect circle without any tools. It's frustrating, very frustrating, but the pleasure comes in witnessing the dedication come to fruition when you finally nail that perfect run. The end product. You're chasing a goal and to see the goal actually happen is worth all of the failures because, you go into something knowing that every route, tactic, or move is high risk-high reward. Most things less than 50% likely to succeed in any one run. So to finally execute a run where everything went exactly to plan, exactly how you imagined it, but it NOT being an imagination: it's fucking fantastic, especially when it comes to team-based games and you and your bros are all training together to get tactics down-pat.

I loved speedrunning when I had the time. Nowadays I don't have the freedom to burn 5 hours just practicing/failing runs for the next time a record attempt fails and turns into 5 hours more of practice/failing runs.

Pretty much sums up any sport or intensive activity. What do you think basketball players do in practice? How do you think runners train for races? How do students study for exams?

Not that I'm defending speedrunning, especially the autistic community. But if we're honest, if there were actual money/awards associated with it it wouldn't seem nearly as odd of an activity.

Depends on the sport; there are quite a few that do more harm than good at the highest level. Many professional athletes end up having debilitating health problems later in life.

>Studying makes you smart
Not necessarily, especially if what you're studying is useless trivia.
>>
Speedrunning used to be what people did after they beat a game, then they beat it on the highest difficulty (for games that actually have really hard modes), then they found other ways to play it just because they liked it so much. Like Doom. Doom on Nightmare was naturally conducive to speed running because it was awesome, it was goddamn hard, and one way you fought through the high difficulty level was to plan a route and do things quickly because enemies respawned. You didn't give up because you got stuck for a couple seconds and had to retry for the WR or whatever, you motored through because you didn't want to die.

Now people speedrun just to say they're the fastest. The games usually aren't that hard at max difficulty, and speedrunning techniques either involve optimized corridor running or glitching through shit. It's retarded, and speedrunners are generally autistic retards.

Some speedrunners are fun to listen too. I don't mean shouting idiots, I mean the streamers that tell some stories etc, so it's basically a podcast with some game running on the background.
I usually just minimize the stream and listen only to the audio doing something else at the same time.

One of the points you guys have said is "once a new trick is found your work is outdated"

This is false because almost all speedrunners are happy when new tricks are found. No speedrunner is like "damn this new trick means I have to redo my run" or anything like that. Again only you people who only see things in terms of money think this is bad.

I mean, some are, and it has nothing to do with money. Your point about money doesn't even fucking make sense, a new trick for someone that makes money on Twitch would mean the stream gets more interesting again granting them more opportunities to make money.

Sometimes people are just bored with grinding after months and settle on a time, then something big gets found but they just don't want to bother any more.
>>
>>320955680
You do know there are international circle drawing competitions, right?

Anyway, enough people care. If it takes 8 people to form a team, then all I need is 16 people in the world (myself included) to enjoy doing the same thing to provide enough motivation. Ergo, it's all about competition. My guild vs their guild. Our tactics vs their tactics. Our builds vs their builds. NA vs. Euro. We had a long-standing competitive rivalry for a good couple years where we were always trying to best each other, and that provided hundreds of hours more fun than any other run-of-the-mill in-game activity that was intended/put there by the developers.

It also taught a lot about the game which was transferable into casual runs which benefited everybody as we all got rich way faster. It used to be that a casual run took 1h30-2h with a high chance of failure. Two teams competing to break that run down to sub-20m allowed so many new tactics, builds, and improvisations to be incorporated into casual runs as to drive those times down to 32-35min with 95%+ success rate.

It's great knowing a game inside and out by knowledge you could often only reasonably obtain by pushing something to its limits to know what those limits are.

Also it gave your guild name weight and prestige, because people knew you were #1/#2 at the hardest area in the game.
>>
BTW Caleb (the guy who ragequits) is one of the coolest and most chill speedrunner out there
>>
>>320953073
Speedruns are nice to get a bit insight view in teh codings of video games, especially N64 speedruns. Glitchless are just boring, nothing to see, just someone do something perfectly.

Some glitches can even be pretty hard.
>>
>>320955625

I think he could have worded it better but he's right.

In competitive gaming if you can master the strategies available, make minimal mistakes and consistently win, you can be considered a skillful player. Those qualities occur naturally and can be applied to sports, chess anything.

Speedrunning involves speed obviously, and consistency and composure play a part but because you are technically playing against the game, it takes on contrived criteria, like no-glitch, 100% and can often become about who finds what out and when. There's a lacking human aspect to speedrunning that makes it less relatable, most people watching haven't done those glitches and have no frame of reference.

Also a big defining feature is that if a run goes wrong, reset start again. That doesn't work in a tournament. You can't just wipe away your fuck ups.

Seriously, I've seen some games that can be completed in less than an hour optimally. Why would you ever want to speed run something longer? It's torture.
