It's just a good manga.
It's fun, it has cool abilities and fights, it has expansive fictional world. And it's also just really well written. Characters aren't introduced without purpose and don't just get forgotten when they've played their part.

That's why Robin got an entire arc dedicated to her character development.
The are two are disagree with. Franky is an apprentice of a legendary shipwright, and so he dreams of creating a ship worthy of his master's legacy. In order to do so it must be the ship of the next pirate king, and so he joins determined to see that happen.
Brook is found in a really miserable state, and he basically owes his (after)life to the Straw Hats. He also vowed to see Laboon again. And he obviously can't sail the Reverse Mountain back to the other side of the Red Line.

What story? They're literally just sailing towards the Raftel, that's the whole overarching story of One Piece.
What are the things of significance Luffy did to the "story"? Yeah, he takes out the main bosses of every arc, like the MC is supposed to. He obviously wouldn't be able to do that solo.
