Also, limited red eye orbs were already a huge hindrance for invaders in DS2.

Twink invasions were shitty in DaS1, but SM did the opposite of solve the problem.
An ideal system would have simply taken the character's highest level equipment and attuned spells into the matchmaking formula instead.

there are lots of ways to approach and fix the problem and soul memory is one of the most horrible solutions possible

why does it even fucking exist after NG? hell, there could have been a trigger in the game half way through NG to disable it and it would have been fine

If the host has a +6 weapon and the invader has a +10 weapon, scale it down to +6. This is an infinitely better solution than soul memory.

you could just check for the highest upgraded weapon on the character and "but muh magic" gets thwarted if catalysts also need to be upgraded to have good damage

and like I said before, this kind of match making doesn't have to apply forever, it can just last until a certain point in NG where the host as progressed enough

If I had said "invader's weapon should be scaled down to match host's damage", I bet you would have literally thought I meant an invader with a greatsword should match the damage of a host with a dagger.

The whole point is that there's a plethora of solutions to twinking and that's just one of them. Fucking anything is better than soul memory.

Tier 36 of SM matchmaking is 3,000,000 - 4,999,999 souls. Red sign soapstone has an upward range of +2. Tier 38 ends at 8,999,999 souls. So unless you plan on firing more than 100,000 lightning arrows they aren't going to affect your matchmaking bracket.

You're right that it puts a life time on your build but that life time is at least 1000 hours. You guys are just fucking ignorant.

Soul memory would have worked if it was based on the amount of souls invested into your character's stats and equipment instead of the number of souls obtained. Then you could invade/be invaded by whatever tier you wanted by simply moving items into your chest to adjust your SM.

I'll take all of 1's flaws over this garbage, getting locked out of progressing through certain covenants because I wasn't in a populated SM range anymore is terrible. I wasn't even twinking out my character, I had mostly spent souls on buying everything that was available to me up to that point which required a good little bit of grind.

The game plays in a way that twinking isn't the be all end all because you can fucking move around and dodge and kill much better geared players by simply playing better or smarter than them.

If this was an MMO where you just click skills then yeah I'd be more understanding to the twinking complaint.

If you already own the base game and the dlcs there's not a whole lot of point in getting it unless you're already a fan and you want to play the game again with a different enemy layout. If you own the base game but not the dlcs it's worth it because the dlc areas are the best in the game. If you don't own the base game then get sotfs as it's a straight upgrade.

I like PvP in Dark souls 1 and in Dark souls 2 , but none of the games are perfect .

But Dark souls 2 has more weapons , spells and dual wielding .

SOFTS is good if you've never played DS2, it fixes some of the initial flaws with DS2, it doesn't make it was good as the Miyazaki games, but it certainly helps and the sheer amount of content basically makes up for alot of the mechanical/story shortcomings.

You can get around that by only counting the most expensive item in each category (weapon/shield, spell, consumable, and each armor location) towards your soul memory.

This ensures two-handers and dual-wielders match up with each other, but I think spell casters might placed slightly higher against players with no spells at all.

I personally find dedicated PvPing in Souls to be shit.
But occasional bout with an invader is more like PvE, a natural element of the Souls world, rather than some faggy arena PvP. I enjoy that kind of multiplayer encounters.

I think what's so insane is how much a sweeping change Soul Memory is. All you had to do in DaS1 was not go human in the starting area and you wouldn't get wrecked. Their solution to this was to drastically change the entire co-op/pvp system, which was perfectly fine outside of this single problem, and fuck the entire game up. Who the hell thought it was a good idea for bad players who lost 50~70% of their souls to be matched with players of the same soul memory who didn't lose a single soul? Twinking, the problem they were trying to solve, IS BUILT INTO THE GAME'S MATCHMAKING.

Multiplayer is half the game. Just because you dont like it doesn't mean its irrelevant. Im not saying it should be ultra balanced and optimized but things like twinking should definitely be addressed in a manner that doesn't ruin duels.

Yeah I basically had to have a character set up where every soul I gained either went straight into levels or purely into the only gear I'd need to buy for that character and found I was pretty consistently outclassing people who had probably lost at least a good 40% of the souls they had gained to end up in the same range while I had used up pretty much every point I could.

Yes, and also because it barely works and doesn't really complement the game's style that well overall. Being invaded for the first time is an ass clenching experience, but the combat is too simple for the amount of grinding and hassle you have to go through. At least Demon's Souls was simple and straightforward.
