I can't think of any game that was as much of a cultural phenomenon as Star Wars targeted to a similar audience that had a fall on the level of Phantom Menace or anything like its extended universe.
You can draw comparisons with Lucas' attitudes and failure as a director with developers like Yoshio Sakamoto or Kojima if you want to but the franchise itself has no good comparisons.

i feel as someone who saw the 97 remaster in theaters as a kid, and then the prequels shortly after, I have a clearer conscience and can judge them more accurately. A lot of people just let their nostlagia of the original films take over and are completely devoid of rational thinking.
Obviously, the prequels arent good, they have bad script and questionable directing that only McDiarmid and McGregor can overcome, the CGI already looks dated, but there's still decency in the movies, more so with III and I. II only gets interesting during the Jango scenes.
VII is about on par with III, maybe a bit better or worse, but that was my first opinion walking out of the theater.

I watched the prequels first and it turned me off of the series so hard that I didn't finally check out the classic trilogy until I was in college.
The only one that wasn't outright terrible was III but as the payoff to such an underwhelming trilogy a lot of its good points fall flatter than they should have.

Ep. 1's got issues (also, Jar-Jar, but he's not even the worst bit of the movie), 2's fucking bad, 3's almost good and could probably be made actually good with a simple recut. They aren't the worst movies ever, not by a long shot.
