Alternative universe based on impossible difficulty where majority of players barely got past first two months. Commander got kidnapped and the aliens didn't fuck around and brought their full force at once.

This or something like "oh some humans traded the rest of humanity for power"

No, they failed horribly and never got past conventional weapons.
As someone previously said, it was based on how many people were able to complete Impossible Ironman. Barely anyone could so they went with an Alien Win scenario.

If it is just like most have speculated, that it is set shortly after the second month of XCOM EU/EW, then why the hell someone would try to give the position of commander to the same guy that got blasted 20 years earlier? I think it is set shortly after the whole templar ship assault, like the alien empire just saw that humans have the possibility to become the next step to godhood and sent ALL their military power to earth or something like that.
>>
>>320865537
Basically, they listened to Dr. Vahlen.
>>
>>320865537

They did manage to down two ufo's, one of which they later (about 20 years later) found again and slowly worked on to make it usable for themselves.
>>
>>320865691
>If it is just like most have speculated, that it is set shortly after the second month of XCOM EU/EW,
It it set several years after EU/EW if I remember correctly.
>>
>>320865691

No, read the book. They didn't really get blasted either, they had losses sure but it was more the fact that suddenly all countries dropped support and then all xcom bases suddenly got struck, aka they were betrayed/leaders were mind controlled
>>
Weren't the aliens in XCOM a fringe group that were trying to mold humanity into a force able to defeat the real threat? Or am I misremembering?

That seems like a better jumping off point instead of just rewriting it to be that you lost the war before it ever got good. Then this game starts with the real deal ayy lmaos steamrolling you back to the stone age and we get a timeskip.
>>
>>320865821
I phrased it in a poor way, I wanted to say "it is set after the defeat on the second month of XCOM"

>>320865943

>>
I want to be excited for this game but i just know that its gonna be total bullshit like xcom 1 was

those gameplay videos where he has that one unit dodge like 4 shots with 1 health bar left, ridiculous
what would really happen is
>all friendly units miss their mark with 80% accuracy,
>Aliens move in and kill the unit in the open with 1 hp
>rookie unit panics and shoots stacy bell, critical hit
>3 more enemies spawn in, get a free turn and flank your positions
im just gonna get mad and turn the game off, i can already feel it

>>
>>320866025
Never ever got people complaining about RNG in xcom. Even Braford tells you every single fucking mission "don't take any chances".

Anything below 70% shot is a huge fucking risk that should be taken only for the last fucking resort.

Anything that isn't 100% is something that can be taken only if you have a WORKING 100% SURE backup plan in case it misses. There's a reason why you should bring grenades on everyone except MAYBE the sniper and focus on giving all the promotions and medals on the heavies.

In case you cannot employ a 100% sure plan, YOU BACK THE FUCK UP AND HUNKER DOWN/OVERWATCH.

As I understand it its an alternate timeline where the original xcom shot down the avengfer ship and the world council was mind controlled into pulling out. These are the only two note worthy events that differ from what would be the nomal EU campaign.

I assume that the avenger was so important to the aliens that they invested in a blitz to control the earth rather than let xcom tinker with it. Maybe we'll find out more about the back story.

>>
>>320866002
Yeah, I think. sort of?
Looked at the ending again and the mega-Etereal said that they were cast out, because the Etereals failed to ascend, "as 'they' thought we would".
Not sure who the mega-Etereal were tallking about.
A bigger badder group of ayys they were allied to or served before? A group that is now chasing their failed experiments?
But they were trying to use humanity as a way to jump ahead in their evolution.
But was it to get back into 'their' good graces and ascend as 'them' had hoped the Ethereals would?
Or to become strong enough to return and fuck 'them' up?
The ending is a bit, iffy, and I might be just a bit extra stupid.

And I think a lot of people had this reaction of, "Wait a minute, I just invested all this time and I beat XCOM." Its a matter of thinking of how to power game. Load up all rookies with high explosive. Their lives mean nothing until you get some really good armor, even then. fuck em. By the time you get to psionics you'll have some good soldiers that survived that mess, and if you got psionics you probably also got the blaster launcher meaning you just won the fucking game there.

Same shit can be said about Xenonauts. The AI in both games isn't challenging, it just gets a shot out of the shroud of war at you. Then you just level the entire area where that shot came from.

What if they reduce the impact of RNG with the miracle system?

You gain miracle points depending on how effective you are.
If your chance of success is at least 85%, you can spend a miracle point to turn that roll to 100%. Otherwise you can't use it at all.

That system isn't casual at all, you could only spend like 2 point ever mission (which you have to build up need I remind you). The purpose is just to make a crucial shot count.

Positioning will still be just as important as before. And you are still screwed if your hit percentage is below 85%

>>
>>320873825
RNG doesn't make the game require more skill.

Or would you rather introduce the RNG factor in the chance your units will trip and fall flat on their face when moving.
Or RNG factor the chance of a meteor landing on you.
Or the RNG factor of Aliens immediately discovering your base
Or the RNG factor your units suddenly coming down with a massive explosive diarrhea in the middle of the mission.
>>
>having trouble with chryssalids

the trick is not to overwatch against them, grenades/rockets and just staying out of one movement range (they will have to move twice to get to you, if you haven't killed them by then you're pretty fucking dumb).

>>
Did nobody pay attention to XCOM's story?

Even if you "win" the campaign, you don't actually defeat the alien invasion.

The entire point of them attacking was slowly leaking technology to humans untill we managed to induce psy-powers in humans.

They basically wanted a hardier psychic support race than the Sectoids.

Even when you defeat the "overlords" at the end of the game, they say they were just lackeys working for a greater power.

If the aliens wanted to conquer earth, they would have day 1. They have limitless troops and aircraft, but purposefully throttle their invasion.

Not the guy you're replying to.

If there was a way to prepare for it or have gameplay around it then it is based on skill.

the reason RNG is linked to skill is because it's RNG, meaning you have to be prepared for the absolute randomness that can be thrown at you, if you didn't know what you were doing then you'd get destroyed.
>>
>>320874413
That's entirely not true. After you make your very first shot or run into a detection square the enemies you see will scamper and every single other pod you run into will scamper like normal.

I don't get people who bash the RNG system.
I can understand wanting to flip the table when you miss a 99% chance shot, but what fun is a game where if you make all the right decisions you cannot possibly lose? Isn't that what makes playing against another person fun in games? The risk of failure is what makes winning against the odds exhilarating.
Just the same with people's issues with permadeath. Being unwilling to put in that investment into a character only to have it lost makes the investment trivial and meaningless.
Is is just a difference in values? Do you hate losing more than you like winning? That would be perfectly justifiable, but as it stands I think this system is in place to make both victory and defeat less trivial.
>>
>>320874914
of course you can overwatch sometimes, but if the lead chryssalid has Lightning Reflexes you are fucked

>>
>>320876432
>but what fun is a game where if you make all the right decisions you cannot possibly lose

>>
>>320876496
Yes.
>>
>>320876432
>but what fun is a game where if you make all the right decisions you cannot possibly lose?
Satisfaction of planning and execution.

If something is random then if you "win" its because you didn't get screwed and if you "lose" there was nothing you could have done.

Better to have a robust system that the player can optimize than a series of dice rolls to see the next cutscene.

>>
>>320876432
Because people get comfortable with it working in their favor and then rely on it so much that it eventually fucks them over. It's an easy thing to bash because rather than adapting to it and incorporating failure into your plan you can just go "fucking no skill RNG bullshit" and people will agree with you.

>>320877202
>not just allowing it into the vivisection chamber
>>
>>320876618
>>320876782
Ah, so for you the RNG makes the decision more trivial, since success or failure doesn't lie entirely with you. I guess I can appreciate that, but I see it as an effort to shape the best possible outcome (or tactical situation), and knowing that it could go tits-up in spite of all your planning just makes it more interesting for me.
Also, there's the fact that the enemy can fail just as hard for the same reasons, which really helps against my urges to call "bullshit" when I get bad rolls.
>>
>>320877165
In XCOM 2, you are trying to show humanity that aliens are the bad guys. But if you do things like murder civilians, you wouldn't really be convincing a lot of people. Unless you uncover some truly heinous alien plots, like turning other humans into a slurry nutrient paste to keep the other ones fed, or using them to fuel their ship furnace or something. The aliens have established a favorable public image now. It's a fight of charisma and ideals.

But for XCOM EU you have a point. Then again, maybe those countries decide to fight the aliens with their own resources and don't know how fucked they are without you.

I suppose we're a generation into the occupation, so it's possible there would be some ayys who grew up being fed the propaganda along with the natives. They'd probably feel even more betrayed than human recruits on discovering the abductions and mass experimentation etc. in that case.
