looking for a fun MP shooter that I can pick up and play without having to spend hundreds of hours to be good enough to have a good time.

Insurgency, it's super cheap right now. There's no grinding for guns or attachments, so the only thing separating you from someone with hundreds of his is, well, experience (rather than xp)
is cod AW any good?
I would say CS:GO, but it's not that easy of a game to master. However, it is only 20 dollars on Steam. They have a good community, updates always being released, and is a really fun game to play.
