Here's my entry. A sword wrongfully assumed by many to be the pinnacle of bladed weapons. Its design didn't change for an entire millenium, and it's 'folded metal' style of smithing is nothing compared to what european smiths managed to create.

Look, any game that has functional, capable, non-shitty firearms as a part of its setting has immediately obviated the need for any kind of short-range bladed weapon.
The problem with VIII wasn't this fucking thing, it was the fact that everyone in the game is smashing each other with knives and sticks when they could just shoot each other and be done.
At least gunblades embrace the utter absurdity of swinging a blade around when you could just shoot a rifle and crank the "cool-but-useless" factor up to 11. A realistic sword is the least realistic weapon of all when gunpowder is easy to come by.

Haven't you ever heard the expression "brought a knife to a gun fight"? Because the implication there is that you dun fucked up, and for good reason.
Gunblades are never practical because blades in ANY setting with worthwhile guns are never practical. But you can either give your character a regular sword like him swinging it around makes any goddamn sense, or you can say "fuck making sense" and give your character a sword that shoots fire and has a motorcycle handle and has a double-barreled grenade launcher for special attacks.
Both the ordinary sword and the ludicrous one are equally impractical as combat choices, but least the latter option is cooler.

Well, discounting the fact that the mechanisms likely wouldnt survive the average impact (superpound, triple pound) or the powder load used, the concept is appealing, heavy impact damage followed by a secondary explosion. The impact crushes the target, and the explosion blasts the target with even more force and heat damage. Hides and scales would be fucked up, along with the underlying soft tissue and probably the bones too.
There is no round being fired though, but adding solid round ammunition to the gunhammer instead of blanks would just make it even more lethal but more unwieldly.
All in all sound concept, but physically impossible.
