She's not like Cloud at all. Cloud was a vagabond who cared very little about anything. Lightning, I don't know what she was. She had a temper and she hated everybody.
The only games I've played in this series are 5 and 13.

The stage show presentations where he likened the ways he liked her to all the ways a rose can be lovely and the interview idea that she was always watching over them. Combined with LR's ending and the association France has had in Japanese popular culture (to the extent that encountering the reality of France has its own syndrome for Japanese patients) and the waifuism becomes too thick to ignore peacefully.

Lots of things happened, but there's no logical progression to be felt within the actual series since every FF is vastly different from one another, with a few exceptions of course. Some people will tell you it was the merger with Enix, others will tell you that it was because of Sakaguchi (the creator of the franchise) leaving and taking a some of the people who originally worked on the games, but the truth is, every FF is directed by a different director, with only one or two of them having directed more than one mainline game. The director of FFXIII is the same guy responsible for X, which happens to share many things common with it, linearity included.
Honestly though I'd say the decline of the series in general is due to a combination of all of the above.
