The only FFs everyone must play are VI, VII and Tactics (MAYBE XII if you LOVE exploration), so, if you haven't played them, do it.
If you have, ignore FF V and go play Bravely Default, or, if you want a traditional turn SNES JRPG, the best are Chrono Trigger, SAGA (all of them), Super Mario RPG and Dragon Quest V and VI.
Ignore Breath of Fire and Earthbound, extremely overrated by nostalgia (literally first babies JRPGs for a lot of people in the US).
It's the best Final Fantasy on the SNES and has one of the largest replay values of all JRPGs ever because of its job system and combat. It's definitely worth playing.
The story is weaker than IV and VI but the game doesn't present itself as seriously, playing like a shounen anime about the power of friendship with goofy quippy characters. So it's still enjoyable, but the GBA translation is absolutely mandatory.
It also has the best Final Fantasy girl.
The legendary weapons thing was cool too. You eventually get them all but you had to think of which ones you wanted first and stuff.

I've been playing through the Android/iOS "remake". I beat the PSX version when I was a kid and this is my second time actually playing the game.
The remake isn't too bad to be frank. It's basically the GBA/SNES version with retarded layers of filters and an updated translation.
FFV spawned Gilgamesh. It has to be good.

its hard to believe now, but when FF5 first came out, and a guy I knew ordered a japanese copy, it was absolutely unreal in it's visual quality
the progression of the old final fantasy style into the newer FF2 (4j) graphics was just jaw dropping, and I couldn't believe that every character had unique sprites and animations for every single class
it created an ideal in my mind that no game, including FF5 itself, could ever live up to
btw make sure you give everyone the monk class immediately, barehanded insures you'll always have some baseline physical damage no matter what other class you're leveling
IE you don't want to play with actual blue mages when you dont have a single useful spell
I literally just beat the game. There are a few flaws that can make the game a hastle, but if you're willing to put up with them the game is great.
I'll list a bunch of cool shit that might interest you

>Excalipoor gets equipped to your characters often
>All of the cool shit I liked ended up not being viable late game
>There are moments where the devs seem to be fucking with you (One of the hardest optional super bosses is in a random chest after 2 bosses and no save nearby. It's on the main path and you will probably open it your first time playing.)
That's about it. If you can look past the real dumb shit like Bone mail ending up on random party members fucking always after a small change then fucking go for it (sell that shit for 1 gil)

I never had an issue with that because I kept tons of useables on me. Nothing worse than not being able to cure an annoying status effect. Typically though not many bosses can zombify you and I was kicking out enough damage to not give a single fuck.
That's what I meant by some classes not being Viable. Atleast it's not FF3 where you get punished for playing as certain classes and they have no benefit to playing them.

The only outright terrible job in the game is Berserker. Every other class have at least some modicum of use: Geomancers can carry you through a large portion of the first world, Beastmasters can get Flare for free by the time you're using Tier 2 elemental magic and is integral to getting the best Blue Magic spells, Bards destroy anything undead, and Dancers get Sword Dance. Literally any class can pull their weight if you use them correctly.
You are correct in that some classes are much better than others, though. Not much reason to run around with a Geomancer when you can have Dual Wield + Rapid Fire + Spellblade or Quick into Dualcast Meteor x2.

Chicken Knife is amazing when used with X-Fight or Aim because it never triggers the random flee this way. Brave Blade is OK, but what you said applies and most classes can't equip it. Chicken Knife is the superior choice most of the time

Well, you had the whole romance of Cecil and Rosa, the inner turmoil of Kane and Cecil, that scene with Edge's parents. Everyone seemed to have some issue they were dealing with which made them interesting characters. In FF V the only striking moment was Galuf's death which was completely out of nowhere. Yes, IV was cheesy, but there was tonal and internal consistency in the writing. FF V was much better from a mechanical point of view, but the story really was sub par and if you disagree you need to read more.
