Coming from someone who's five starred almost every song on Expert across series, 3 was fun because the not tracking was perfect, where is 1 and 2 were practically broken in how small the window was. You try playing that shit on an uncalibrated TV, and even if you judge your timing from the music itself, you're going to miss random notes. If Jordan was in GH3 it'd be a fun song, but the fact that it's in 2 makes it a stiff chore

Its not a matter of the games being harder, it's the fact that the timing for the note tracking is literally just incorrect, and the hammer-on/pull-off system doesn't work as well. Compared to how fluid 3 feels, 1 and 2 feel like iPhone games. If this were any genre but a rhyhm game I'd agree with you and git gud, but it's not supposed to be punishing and challenging. The technology to read your inputs correctly just wasn't up to par until 3. If you actually played the games at a "high level" you'd agree with me, since the difference in note tracking is pretty obvious.

I'll never understand why /v/ liked 2 more than 1. The level design was much more forgettable, and playing as a Big Daddy was boring and felt OP. I much preferred the story progression of the first game, and the spooky atmosphere of entering Rapture for the first time.

Level designs didn't feel that much different, but I liked the way 2's design allowed for more varied encounters. While 2 was easier, it by no means felt OP, especially when you had to deal with bigger hordes more often.
And the original's story is only memorable because of one twist, where as 2's was consistent through out, and had a more interesting angle of being an allegory for a custody battle and the difficulty of balancing how to properly raise a child while still being an good role model.
And I agree that 1 had the novelty factor, but that spooky atmosphere goes away so quickly.
