If you're really interested, go find a group to play with. Groups are where the real operating happens. Pubs (not even sure if they still really exist, I last played on one in A2, before DayZ happened) will at best get you shooting at some targets with a loosely organized couple of guys in procedurally generated missions.

lol yes. One of the recent updates nerfed the fuck out of them. They added two pellets, but increased the spread. Even before that you wouldn't always get a one hit kill in close quarters, and you'll be dead before you can work the pump for a follow up shot.
And slugs are worthless. Two extra points to turn it into a bolt action rifle, when bolt guns for both teams are only one point, and they also don't always kill in one shot.

The pvp is like any twitch shooter, if you like them you'll like it, and if you hate them you'll hate it.
As for pve, the bots are pretty robust on the hard settings, especially the ones with RPGs. And some custom servers will throw them at you in waves of fifty or more.

For Insurgents, use the AKM with AP rounds and a foregrip.
For Sec, the L1A1 with AP, or the m4 with AP and a foregrip.
Iron sights are almost always the only sights you need.
Always use AP rounds. If you have to buy one thing with your points, buy AP rounds. The only time HP is even remotely useful is for Sec players in modes with very limited supply points, as Insurgents have to pay extra points for armor and often forego using it.
The 2 point vest gives you two of whatever grenade you chose in the second grenade slot. That can be cheaper than having one grenade each in both slots.
Sec forces get free light armor, use it.
Turn off auto bipod deploy in the settings. It will save your life.
Aim for center of mass.
Play Skirmish, Push, or Conquer to get a feel for the maps.
Default key for NVGs is B. You have to buy them in the equipment menu first though.

I've found that the extra power it has get me more one hit kills to center of mass, and at longer ranges. Also, the report of the weapon is identical to the FAL, which is useful when you're flanking as any enemies who hear your shots may assume that it's one of their snipers who's firing and not you. I might recommend the Galil over the M4 for the same reason, but the iron sights on the Galil feel a bit more restrictive.

The problem with insurgents camping the hillside is that unless they're smart enough to sit in the building with the hole in it or the far right building then they end up profiling themselves against the sky and make easy targets. I end up looking for snipers at the buildings and scan my way between the two. The only time I have trouble with insurgents camping the hill is when I forget to sweep the humvee on the far right and there's a faggot sitting there.
The problem with snipers in this game is that they don't operate like snipers and they never, ever counter snipe. They're just perpetually looking for easy kills unless they're actually good but most people who pick up the sniper and sit in the back of the map never are. >The only time HP is even remotely useful is for Sec players in modes with very limited supply points, as Insurgents have to pay extra points for armor and often forego using it.
HP is one shot on limbs though, even with pistol caliber guns. Spraying at muricans with an HP loaded sterling is fantastic.
