Fucking hell, do I really have to argue this? It has:
Murder
Dismemberment
Cannibalism
Torture
People cutting off their own limbs
Disembowlment
Shitty Jump Scares
And, yes, people constantly dying and turning into zombies which you are powerless to stop and infest every location.
All of which are common horror elements. Once again, just because the game involves bad writing and stupid drama doesn't mean it's not also horror.

Backtracking in a horror game can be effective if they do shit like make changes to the area
Like Dead Space was an example. You'd go back to an area and it would be different. Like that one station where at the beginning of the game there are like 50+ dead bodies just lying around in body bags.
You come back later and they are all gone. Shit like that is spooky
>>320745257
Don't even blink! Blink and you're dead!
>>320750692
Man that reminds me of that movie Occulus for some reason.
The first 2/3rds were 10/10 I thought but then it basically devolved into people with spooky makeup chasing the characters around the house.
I know good endings are hard to write but they really dropped the ball.
>horror game
>the monster is shown in the commercial cover and pretty much everything
>every time it appears in game they make a massive deal out of
Fuck these kinds of games, half the horror is not knowing what the monster is, every fucking time they show the monster immediatly at the start.
>>320750378
Valid point. In a way, though, it creates a sort of anticipation; at least it worked in the '90s, anyway. I remember first booting up SH or RE2 and seeing those warnings and feeling a little anxious. No audio or anything; just a still image telling you shit's about to get creepy.
It would definitely be out of place in modern games, though. We're more than familiar with all of that now.
>>320737773
That's like saying slasher movies are horror. They're not. They're thrillers. Tired of pansy faggots these days being offended and scared by everything. Fucking babadook was considered horror. Even Halloween was considered horror. They're not.

Of course, FNAF was a horror game and was well designed with that in mind.
Due to its unique nature and the fact it was a very small indie game at first there was no hints or indication at what could happen. Many of the memes and secrets we now took for granted were unknown to the players, and added to the mythos.
Personally I think the 3rd game was the best in the series in terms of capturing the feeling and had the best gameplay, but people aren't allowed to like a decent game series on /v/ anymore because its a meme.
