It's gay but in this situation probably something like Minecraft, or any world building type game. Realistically I'd probably say Civ V/Age of Empires II, something that has a shit ton of replay value.

Basically this. I've barely played Dwarf Fortress and 5 years is probably not enough to really learn the game, so 5 years of getting stabbed, bashed, molested and going insane from trying to figure out Dwarf Fortress.

I imagine Animal Crossing would be nice. While there is only so much to do each day, having holidays and stuff to look forward to would help you keep sane.
