Preferably with similar dark atmosphere.
It's a pity they don't make adventure games like that anymore..
Maybe something like The Black Mirror (2,3).

Gabriel Knight is one of the best. First one just got a remake, but I can't stand new Gabriel's voice. Tim Curry rules. There is also Harvester, shitty game, but interesting experience. Kind of similar to the first Phantasmagoria, but with less cut scenes, and horrible combat. And a lot of pointless gore.

Absolutely not. It's extremely predictable, the dialogues are shallow and unengaging, and most of the time all that's going on is you're finding a different route to get to X.
Also it's terribly designed, and buggy. The number of useless journals that are very slight variants of one another far outweighs the number of items, and almost none of the puzzles is any good.
The horror is fantastic, but as a game it's a chore that leaves you extremely unsatisfied.

Johnothan Boakes games are always really well made. Very comfy, creepy, but a tad boring in some parts. I would recommend Dark Fall Lost Souls and Barrow Hill as well. Also if you haven't played the classic called The Longest Journey, do so.
Try The Cat Lady. Grim, depressing, gorey, but not without hope if you do the right things.
Primorida is pretty great, solid ass fuck voice acting and a fairly interesting, unique story to boot.
Some people consider it fairly easy though.
Wadjet Eye games are considered good, the Blackwell series, heard good things about Technobabylon and there's a new Tex Murphy too.
Don't know how dark they are though.

He's pretty much the ONLY developer out there making games about the proper, 'classical' ghosts.
And he's definitely the only one who has come remotely close to adapting M.R. James to video games.
I played Dark Fall and liked it a lot. For a game set in a single location with no NPCs, it has great character and atmosphere. That's also the thing great about The Lost Crown. I wouldn't mind living in Saxton.
Barrow Hill is actually Matt Clark, but they're good friends. If I ever learned how to make games I'd probably try to do what they do.
Tormentum Dark Sorrow isn't bad. And I gotta recommend The Longest Journey. Doesn't quite fit the theme of the thread but I love it too much to not mention it.

Speaking of adventure games, I know it's not a horror game, but is Lost Horizon any good? I had mixed feelings about The Secret Files, but LH looks a bit like a remake of Flight of the Amazon Queen or Indy games, and I'm thinking about getting it.
