Except Luke hmentioned early in episode 4 how he was experienced with flying around a ship for fun and hunting down rats when he's done his chores.
Then later reconfirmed that the ship he used had similar controls to the X-wing which is why he sortied with them due to them lacking pilots but having extra ships.
Then the only reason why he got the shot into the deathstar was because his teammates along with Han Solo managed to get darth vader off his back due to his inexperience dogfighting and he was guided by Obiwan to use the force to shoot into the death star.
It was far better written than Rey is a mary sue so she's perfect and cannot lose.
