I finished Yakuza 1 just today. I tried to give everything a fair shake and try out a bunch of the side stuff, but ultimately I was just aiming to finish the game and get to 2, which I intend to spend more time with.
I know some sidequests can only be done at certain times, and lock out eventually. Is there any indication of that in-game? I also remember the Mission menu in Yakuza 1 that logged all of your sidequests being worthlessly vague about anything you'd started but not finished.

Never played Y1, just from the 2nd. But, there is no indication of the missions, you need to lurk around. Some missions are only available at certain day times(like food in restaurants in 2) and while doing certain missions you need to do them at different day times or different cities. Basically, if you want to see all and get everything you need to faq. But my advice is, just do some substories if want to play the main-games in arrow. Don't try to 100% everything because you will get bored doing the same mini-games in every single game(like darts, pool, karaoke, or fishing and golf in later games) and that will get you nowhere.
In Y2 if you dont use a faq you will also miss special heat actions in certain parts of story. For example, there is a special heat when fighting in a bar and will miss it because there is no indication for that and doing it is a pain in the ass because there are a bunch of chairs in the way.
And when playing 2, save the money, because you need like 300k early or mid game on to progress the story or beat that person on mahjong

His substories were pretty good yeah, Pretty much everyone liked his fighting style and Sugiuchi was a good final boss for his chapter.
The main issue's with him is that as a character, he's pretty weak, his chapter feels rushed as fuck and his final fight against Munakata which is also the Final Boss fight for the game is without a doubt the worst in the series.

I got 4 and so far its been pretty boring.
The combat isn't that great and fights are over in no time. You run around a city and get into fights that take 10 seconds of waiting to begin and are over in 30 seconds.
The only good part of the game so far was when you went underground to get your client registry back and you fight like 30 guys and a boss.
Its how I thought the entire game was going to play like.
