the only thing we know about it is it's made by Nintendo and it doesn't have a disc drive, and it's supposed to be like nothing else they've ever done before and there are strong hints at a marriage between home console and handheld, at least for the software

Will nintendo actually use a controller comprised of just a controller? If they do, it must really be some magical technology, like the controller itself is able to transform into a variety of controllers, rather than just having buttons on screen. I guess this could be done with having parts that can be stuck on the controller, but that's pretty gimmicky and causes a lot of tiny pieces to be all over the place.

NX is the successor to the 3DS and it will double as a Wii U controller and share Wii U's future titles.. The Wii U successor wont come out till 2020.
It's both a portable and tv console in one, comprised of two separate hardware pieces, the portable unit and the console dock port that charges it and allows hookup to the tv. The same games work on either mode, tv or portable so you get better value.
Bravo, Nintendo. You might just do alright this time. Because any other idea is doomed to flop.

I feel like none of these would be enough. Any of them would be great additions to a launch roster.
But Nintendo HAS to have a main-line addition to one of their bigger games (Mario or Zelda, really) and a good 3rd party game from a proven studio with a proven franchise.
They are already retiring the Wii U with what is undoubtedly the worst lineup of games they've ever had for a console (excluding the obvious Virtual Boy). If they don't have a strong showing, they won't be able to move systems after a bad showing like that.
