Who /mage/ here?
>>320654332
Arcanum fucking pisses me off.
Infact, every Troika game pisses me off.
Fucking wasted potential.
>>320654839
>Arcanum fucking pisses me off.
I mean, the ending is rushed as fuck but the game has almost unparalleled world building and dialogues. Also those quests are really engaging and fun. Insane replay value as well.
But why does it piss you off?
>>320654332
man recalling how fucking massive those cities were was painful i don't have it in me to explore them nowadays
>>320654940
>the brothel house questline
>going around returning a pocket watch to a cheating husband
>give it to the maid
Those were great.
>>320654972
I think I was the only one having genuine fun exploring Tarant, Caladon and the like. The soundtrack was amazing ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ62O51ia64 ) and I really liked how I had to check number plates on houses to know where was the next quest objective.
>>320655064
>Brothel questlines is totally different if you're male or female
I got to serve as a whore as I passed the beauty check, pretty fucking great.
>>320654940
It pisses me off because I've read about interviews about what they wanted to do but couldn't.
Arcanum has the fucking terrible combat, with XP being rewarded per hit or something. Excellent world building and fun quests as you said though.
ToEE has amazing Turn-based combat, but everything else is pretty much fucking garbage. Short as shit, off-combat pathing is completely broken, barely any story, shop UI is garbage.
And then there's Vampire. You get to the sewers and the game just gets thrown off a valley.
I just can't play Troika games anymore. It's the most depressing shit ever.
It pisses me off that Leo Boyarsky is now wasting whatever talent he has left at Blizzard and Tim Cain is relegated to a fucking code-monkey at Obsidian.
>>320655313
>It pisses me off that Leo Boyarsky is now wasting whatever talent he has left at Blizzard and Tim Cain is relegated to a fucking code-monkey at Obsidian.
This. Arcanum has a beautiful world and I loved the dichotomy between magic and traditional means. Also has a great world that reacts accordingly to the player's actions, which is a rare thing. I'm sad that Troika is gone.
>try to play it
>make melee character
>get to the first village
>talk and do some quests
>want to move on
>lol-no pay up insane amount of money or get fucked
>alright im gonna fuck you up
>fight
>get raped by his nigger henchmen
>reload
>ask him if we can make a deal
>tells me he wants to but he magically knows I talked to the town chef so now he doesnt like me
The part near the beginning of the game where you have to kill this guy and two thugs to cross a bridge sold me. Nigger walked up to me and knocked my unconscious or something while his two buddies kept on kicking me on the floor.
>>320655815
>>320656421
There's at least a dozen ways to get past that obstacle and I loved it.
>>320654332
Oh, Arcanum thread!
>Worldbuilding
11/10.
This game made fucking steampunk good, that's how epic the worldbuilding is.
>Story
8/10
Starts as generic trite but then quickly goes off the rails with the entire Chosen One stuff and turns really interesting
>Quests
11/10
The replay value of this game is in-fucking-sane. The differences your skills, alignments, stats, followers, previous choices, own fucking memory and all other elements can make to the quest is probably the greatest of all RPGs ever made.
>Followers
8/10
I wish more of them were voiced. There is a truly varied collection of individuals that have distinctive personality, interactions, quirks and behaviours. Quite a feat given they are all set on the same dolly with slight differences in their programming.
>Combat
2/10
UGH! It can make you wish to claw your own eyes out at times. It's boring, uninspired, AI is stupid, there are countless game-breaking bugs that you can trigger by accident just by fighting at normal, the armour system is simply broken and the game puts more and more combat instead of more and more story in final stages. It's really boring and tiresome, while the only way to use real-time combat is to play as melee - every other weapon and playstyle requires using clunky interface that isn't useful even in turn-based mode (spells, anyone?)
>Music
10/10
Quintarra can go looper for entire week, nobody minds. No, really. I've tested it while sailing - the music piece was looped on the speaker, nobody ever said anything bad about the same piece playing for 10 days straight.
>Little things that matter
9/10
While obviously the final stages of the game are rushed as fuck, most of the time it's highly polished game with GREAT attention to details. You can literally sink in the sidequests, wondering how to solve them with materials and skills at hand.
Your favourite compaion, /v/?
>>320655815
>Literally 20 ways to go past that bridge
>Whines about dead-end in the game
Son, I've got a message for you. Apparently RPG is not your thing.
>>320655815
>>320656421
>Convince the thief you're an undercover thief from the big city and you can help him get some friends there, get through
>Sneak and lockpick the door, get through
>Sneak and pickpocket the key, get through
>Kill them with your friends or by yourself, get through
>Use dynamite to blow the gate and get through
>Pay the toll and get through
>Accept the bandit's quest and get through
>Use magic to charm bandits and get through
>Use magic to make the bandits flee, get through
Probably forgot a bunch of ways but it's pretty fucking good.
>>320657157
Caladon theme is pretty amazing too. You didn't mention replay value that's beyond incredible, IMO.

Where is this in the game?
>>320655815
kek, I like to get dynamit from the mine and throw it at them.
Most of the time it kills one oger and hurt the prince and the other oger pretty badly
>>320659775
I usually sneak past them and drop the dynamite on the gate, guaranteed kill on 1 ogre + opens up the gate. Doesn't even aggro them, for some reason.
>>320659542
Too much of silence in it. Not enough melancholy.
who's the lady in the cover
The very first obstacle with the village gate is probably one of the best game design decisions I've seen.
>barely started, still uncomfortable about many mechanics
>game throws you a huge wall at your face
>gated exit with a party of bandits you can't possibly defeat on your own
>have to be creative and learn the world's rules to get past
10/10
Compare to modern "rpgs" and see how far we've fallen.
>>320659124
>Villages
just a reminder.
You can download the complete soundtrack and the notes from Ben Houge's page for free
http://benhouge.com/arcanum.html
There he also talks about the music and what inspired him.
>One very important aspect of Arcanum is that the player may choose to follow a path of good or evil. For this reason, I purposefully avoided writing a sweeping, heroic title theme. Instead, I tried to make the theme morally ambiguous, almost tragic (for Arcanum can be a world of hardship), yet epic (which truly describes the vast scope of Arcanum). I've tried to suggest several things without committing to a single interpretation. I also think a slower, more pensive theme is appropriate to the thoughtful nature and pace of a role-playing game.
>>320659929
The cover of Arcanum of Steamworks and Magick Obscura is dominated by the tattooed head of a female elf. None of the player portraits for elves or half-elves look like that, nor does any prominent elven npcs. There are also a spellslinging mage and dwarf with a flamethrower included, neither notable characters but far more awesome.
The game has an alternate brighter cover with Raven, whom you do meet, prominently displayed. The unidentified female elf in the commercial cover is by that logic most likely Min'Gorad, the leader of the Dark Elves, who does not have a character potrait in-game.
>>320654332

Did you type this out yourself or did you copy it from some wiki?
>>320659929
Dunno, but my teen self was thrown away from that cover for whatever reason. Then I've read about the game few articles and I was back in the store to get it.
Still got the T-shirt they've been adding to the game. Still fits. Still with good print on it. Quality bonus, which says about quality of game too.
>>320660160
I think the contemplative, melancholic soundtrack is much more interesting than epic orchestral generic stuff we get in many other games, much like Morrowind's sad tracks vs Skyrim's over the top epicness.

Also on an unrelated note, did anyone else think finding locations reading number plates was amazing?
>Meet my buddy at 49 Devonshire way
>have actually to find the street and read plates to find the right house
>>320659929
The elements of cover are picked from idea images created during early development. There was a shitloat of sketches made by designing team when they were still writing the game in most broad terms. From all those countless sketches, few that the team working on the game found the most inspiring were picked, mashed together and ended up as cover for the game.
Go figure what stimulated those guys the most.
>>320660305
definitely.

>elves think they're the oldest and most superior race
>advances in biology point out they're just a mutant human subspecies
all the typical elven supremacists in the game become bloody hilarious with that knowledge

Why wouldn't I support them? Seriously, it makes sense for even the most "evil" character to support them - even if just for the sake of bloodbath and revolution on streets.

Dark elves? Just bunch of idiots
Wood elves? Different bunch of different idiots
Elven supremacists? True idiots
All the lofty ideas of high and mighty elves? Bullshit
And the best part? How subtle it was. Instead of Witcher-style constant bashing of chaotic stupid elves (which was working in books, but in games falls short), you can just slowly stab them slowly with the realisation they are bunch of retarded hypocrites.

Dog >>>>>> every other follower
Seriously, from purely mechanical standpoint, the dog can do more than rest of your team, even if that team consist of 7 other people...
... which by itself is fucking great. Sever followers and a loyal dog. It's like you are travelling with an army. Hell, the late game pretty much asks for that, since there is so much combat and then again, this is a game that shitload of stuff can be done with high Charisma and Persuasion, so this might be even intentional in some way, so you are dragging small army with yourself without much problems.
>>320663257
so how did the rest of you get their ships?

>>320663123

Fun fact, the ship's wheel is actually a human NPC with a different skin. You can see that by hovering over it and see the human (two crossed pistols) icon. You can also force combat and hit it, it will make normal human pain noises.
>>320663461
Nah, those felt like cheating. The medical spiderbot is so insanely powerful it just breaks the game. You can turn on real time in combat and just go make some tea and sandwiches while bot(s) clear the area

It's a common time-saving measure.
>>320663632
I thought that was the appeal. I like having an absurdly powerful mechanical detachment following me and clearing any foolish individual stupid enough to stand in my way.You need tons of skill points and dumpster diving to make it happen anyway and I thought it was an amazing reward.
>>320663632
best thing is: bots can actually gain levels
they do lose them once you pick them up for repairs but if you can keep them going for a long time eventually you end up with a couple lv 50 automatons
This game is baffling to me.
It's fucking terrible, yet people love it. Honestly, as far as isometric RPGs are concerned it ranks among the worst I've ever played.
Yes, the setting is great. Yes, the RPG elements are pretty cool.
But the game itself is such utter shit. What the fuck are you niggas smoking, saying the replayability is great? NOBODY wants to replay any of those arduous dungeons, least of not Blackrock (was that the name? dwarf dungeon) without being a mage with teleport.
Let's not forget how useless guns and mechanical skills are, either. You wanna be a gunsmith? Hahahahahaha, yeah, okay buddy.
The fact that people are posting screenshots of the fucking manual, the FUCKING MANUAL, shows how terrible this game is. When the manual is the coolest thing you can fucking pick out of this pile of shit, you know something isn't right.
Took me forever to realise you can toggle combat and ctrl click something to force an attack on containers/doors.

You actuallymeet the real guy you're supposed to be a reincarnation of, he's still alive
The ending changes depending on how much you played along with being a god.

Yes. Some quests are really bugged and rarely work as intended unless you patched it. High resolution patch is a no brainer too.
do any of the unofficial patches make high level science stuff like powered armor and automatons work?
who else gave the ring away?
Who /FUCKING INSTANTLY KILLED BY FUCKING NOTHING AFTER REFUSING MAGNUS FROM JOINING THE PARTY PERMANENTLY/ here?
never.
Did you really trust that creepy ass gnome in shrouded hills?

>2 fate points stored
ayy
I think the non-combat magic was fucking brilliant too.
>fast travel with teleportation
>Reading alignment (even with regular NPCs, for some reason it added a lot of character to nameless NPCs or even bartenders, shopkeepers)
>Summoning spirit from corpse to have a chat
I only used those, mostly and it was a lot of fun.

>Summoning spirit from corpse to have a chat
>Amount of data you could get this way
>All those dialogues with the dead
>>320668335
>That Caladon murder case you could solve so quickly if you just summoned the spirit of the victim

>literally 20+solutions this problem
>you cry because you can't faceroll through it

I have completed this quest like 10 times and i never thought of that, fuck me
He did nothing wrong.
>>320669157
He did an awful lot of wrong stuff but he wasright all along.
Honestly, I felt like the main quest ending was really tacky and really subpar compared to the rest of the game. I guess it's the typical Troika problem of running out of time/money (both).
I think this is one of the best arcanum threads we've had lately.

Wasn't Arcanum made from scratch in 9 months by 12 people?
>>320666592
>the fucking opening cutscene shows your airship being blown the fuck up by said 'heavy' aircraft, piloted by orcs no less.
>I'm looking for the city of Qintarra. It's quite important.
>Qintarra? You seek Qintarra?
>Yes, that's what I said. Do you know where it is?
>It's in the forest. Even a fool knows that.
>I realize it's in the forest...
>Then why are you asking me where it is?
>Do you know where Qintarra is located or not?
>Yes.
>Out with it, man!
>In the Glimmering Forest.
>Yes. I bloody know it's in the blasted forest already, we've been over this. Look, this isn't funny. Where, exactly, in the forest is Qintarra?
>In the trees.
>IN WHAT TREES?!
>The trees in the forest :^)

Elves, not even once.

And that's when I pull out the elephant gun.
I've only played it once about three years ago. I wanted to replay it again so badly, but decided to wait so I wouldn't get burnt out.
Thinking I should wrap up withfallout 4so I can finally play this again. I want to make a gun/tech character so bad.
>>320672206
Holy shit what ammunition does that run on?
Did anyone try to do a gnome playthrough? Is the dialogue any different?

Is it better to specialise in herbology or therapeutics ?
