Imagine you eat an apple pie, and you like it.
Then some fat guy wearing a safety helmet barges into your home with a ton of apple pies. He keeps eating them. A lot. Every day. And he won't stop telling you how great apple pie is.
He forces it down your throat for every meal. Forcing you to eat it even though the taste has long since gotten dull and unappealing. All the while he just keeps on and on about his love for apple pies.

First was a nifty title that didn't reach full potential.
Second was a cheap obvious cash grab that was even sloppier than the first.
Third returned to the original's standard, which wasn't very high and thus it was eh.
No cared about the fourth because it had lost everything people liked about the series. Only the rabid youtube baboons played it.
So no, it didn't become too mainstream, it became shit with a shitty fanbase.
There was people hating this game when it first came out, OP.
Difference now is that people who liked it moved to /vg/ so it seems like more hate it.

Well yeah, second game gives you a hat freddy head which takes away 90% of the suspension, and the music box cranking takes away 9% more.
Third game having one monster feels like a ripoff.
