They're not as destructive and devastating as they are in real life. Greatest melee weapon of all time to put in the hands of a battlefield soldier is the one-handed war hammer, but it's too OP to use in video games. The way it works is that the weight of the hammer head could pummel an armored soldier down to the floor, then when he's on the floor you turn it around and use the pick to pierce the helmet and kill him. It doesn't even require much training, you already have the "bashing" motion built-in since you were born, and gravity does the rest.
It's so perfect that the design of the modern war hammers hasn't changed at all. There was no need to.

Well, I would, if I could. The light club is surprisingly effective, as is the heavy club. Too bad the aim on it sucks - you'll always need to have aim intent on when going for the head, or else you'll miss and them your foe can stab your shit in.
Though, of course, you could just go for the legs and finish 'em off while they're downed. Either way, it'll kill a migant, heathen, or a cerb pretty damn well.
Anyone know how good the golf club is, as an aside? You can fit it into your pocket, yeah, but hitting power is sketchy. Might be the same as the Light, not sure.

Blunt weapons need more energy to swing because of how they're balanced. A blade is more versitile, so in a game where you play as some sort of adventurer it would make sense to take a sword over blunt unless you knew you were going up against tons of undead or tin men. Even then, I usually play spellsword anyway, so I just blast those fuckers.
If I'm playing chivalry, though, you gotta go full crusader with the mace.
