first off- they started catering to china, with boom in asian themed characters-
certain themes or characters became off limits, (no panda champion and no more skeletons because china finds showing bones disrespectful)
also the game and it's lore/community stopped being fun and almost satirical, and started taking itself seriously. No more joke or pop culture reference characters, all srs characters. and take the joke ones- and make them srs.
