which Ys is your favorite?
>>
Oath. I'm playing Napishtim right now and it's pretty mediocre. Ys really has as many good games as boring ones.
>>
>>320581474
Oath is the best.
>>
>>320581474
Oath in Fleghana - basically the high point of Ys before they went with team mechanics or the removal of jumping. The YsIII Turbografx-16 red book is still my favorite soundtrack in the series with the ending theme Wanderers from Ys always bringing a tear of nostalgia to my eye.
>>
Chronicles

I actually thought the bumper system was better
>>
I finished 6 the other day. I think it's my least favorite. But I haven't played Calceta.
>>
>>320582509
Well, 8 is bringing the jumping back. I'm remaining cautious but any game with a jump button is already doing SOMETHING right.
>>
Ys is getting worse and worse with every new game. It's strange considering Nayuta was all you would want from a Ys game, yet Falcom went with changing the formula for the worse in the Ys games instead of experimenting with shit like that in titles like Nayuta.
>>
>>320581474

For the bosses? Oath
For the difficulty? Oath
For the OST? Oath and Seven
For the replayability? Origin
For the cute waifus? MoC and Seven
For the nostalgia? Chronicles

>>320582678
I love the way in which Chronicles is SO fast paced.
>>
I've only played 7 and Celceta so far. I think I like Celceta a little more.

Origins.

Playing the game through 3 different playstyles was a blast figuring out different strategies for the puzzles and boss encounters.

The music in it is some of the best I've encountered in vidya.

Still better than what Ys has become.

>>
Hard to say, they have different strengths. Haven't played them all yet, though. I like Ys 1's feeling of discovery and atmosphere the most, but Ys 2 is a much better game mechanically. I also love how no-bullshit they are. You're just thrown into the game and have to find your way around. 6 has decent exploration and combat, but doesn't excell in either. Ys Origin and Oath in Felghana are amazing action games but are too linear, filled with cutscenes and handholdy. Ys 7 has the most content, best level design and the most complex mechanics but feels very sloppily designed and drags on.
>>
>>320581474
The only Ys games I haven't played are the PCE version of Ys IV and Memories of Celceta

Out of them all I think I enjoyed Ys Seven the most, but I have the most nostalgia for Ys III on Sega Genesis

I'm really gonna have to get a Vita soon to play Celceta and Ys 8
>>

give it a break, man. It was the first one to be put in a 3d environment. I will admit that compared to Ys games that have come out since then Ark is so so, but still it's by no means a bad one
>>
>>320581474
II or Oath in Felghana. I can't decide
>>
>>320581474
Either Origin or 7. I'd say 7 overall, but the last third of the game really drags.
>>
>>320588586
the steam version is better than the original releases because they changed the item that let you warp out of dungeons warp to save points instead, cutting out a lot of tedious walking back in forth you had to do

it's still not the greatest of ys games though

Anyone know how to get YS I&II Eternal on PC to work? The colors are all messed up for me.
>>
I can't choose a favorite. 1 and 2 are great and don't drag on unnecessarily. The original sidescrolling version of 3 is awful. 4 isn't as good as 1 or 2 but returns to that style of bumper combat. I still haven't been able to find a copy of ys v so I might have to emulate it. 6 is great but it has a lot of glitches. I don't like the casualized combat of 7 and celceta. The felghana remake has cool sections but the bosses have too many bullshit attacks. It felt more like a puzzle than a boss fight. Origin is probably my favorite because it ties in well to 1 and has good stories. I cry evertim when feena and reah leave
>>

>I actually thought the bumper system was better.

Sort of agree here. At the very least, it was the most unique combat system in an ARPG I've played. But I really dislike the way bosses were handled in 2. I hated being forced into using fire magic in every single fight. That said, the way they play now is definitely more engaging than Chronicles, which you could play mostly with just 1 hand.
>>

How hard are these games? I'm going to play Oath first, what difficulty should I choose?
>>
Is Nayuta no Kiseki any good?
>>
>>320602752
Congratulations you chose the hardest game. Now pick Nightmare. They are hard, if you get all the equipment up to a boss and leveled to the point where it starts to become a grind (or when enemies deal single digit damage to you) then you are good to go for a fight with something that feels "almost impossible". If you don't then it's just "impossible".
>>
>>320602498
Ys game don't have much text to translate so I'd say by the end of 2016 at the latest.
>>
>>320603182
Do you really need to fight mooks to level up? That's lame. But it looks like boss attack patterns are simplified on lower difficulties so I guess nightmare it is.
>>
>>320603910
Yeah but the system used in these games is pretty good, it works in some sort of exponential fashion where for each level it takes about twice as much time to reach the next one (when grinding the same enemy). If you are undereleveled you will quickly gain experience to catch up and reach some sort of equilibrium point where you receive next to no experience until you get to the next dungeon with higher leveled enemies.
>>
>>320581474
They're all shit games senpai.

I would give Oath a 10/10 and Origin a 9/10 for the same reasons you did the opposite.

While Origin's story is good, the game suffered from dialogue breaking the flow of gameplay way too much, especially since the player characters have speaking roles. Yunica's dialogue specifically creates a huge disconnect between gameplay and story, since she'll plow through hordes of enemies and defeat giant monsters without breaking a sweat, then afterwards act like she barely survived these encounters through sheer luck.

The biggest problem is that 90% of the dialogue is mandatory, and you have to sit through it every time you play through the game. My favorite thing about the story in Oath is that half of it is optional; you only see it if you go out of your way to talk to NPCs to get a better grasp on what's going on. This was handled especially well in Ark, where nearly every time you beat a boss, every NPC in the game would get new dialogue. This brought life to the game's world and made NPCs not seem entirely mindless like in many other RPGs, but most importantly, it served as a way to give players a break between segments of the game while not impeding those who just want to rush to the next area.

In Origin, what with the dialogue being sprinkled throughout the game (at the midpoint of each area, before picking up artifacts, before boss fights, etc.), it feels less like a break and more like a series of speedbumps you have to trudge through to continue playing.
>>
>>320604776
Would you rate it differently if Origin had an option to skip all dialogue?
>>
>>320604776
Yeah, I can see what you mean. I mean it's not like you're not forced to read at least some of Oath's story too but yeah people have brought up the village multiple times now. I just think the story is bland as fuck, while Origin has Hugo, Toal, Epona etc. Yunica is definitely the weakest of the playable characters.
>>

>>320605140

Yeah, absolutely, considering it's my only real problem with the game. I wouldn't even mind it so much if the game didn't offer so much replayability, what with three characters plus their EX versions to play as.

I've done four full playthroughs and a few half-playthroughs of Oath, and waiting through dialogue was a chore sometimes even in that game, but Origin takes it to a whole new level.
>>
>>320581474
Oath, but not by much. If Origin had as much effort put into its world as Oath did it would be the better game by virtue of having Khonsclard as the only annoying boss compared to Oath having six that I could not fucking stand fighting.
>>
>>320585654
Dawn of Ys is actually one of the best games in the series.
>>
>>320603910
You have to kill regular enemies to level but you never have to grind unless you skipped literally everything since the last boss.
>>
>>320608905
What if you do skip literally everything since the last boss, how much harder would it be? I figure you can still dodge everything and win, but would I be doing 1 damage per hit or something?
>>
>>320609125
Pretty much, I don't know exactly how it works but Ys does damage calculations on a "attack - defence" basis. There is a threshold you need to get over or else you do 1 damage.
