Delete some pre-installed apps like youtube, or hulu or something. You should be able to find some sort of drive to work with Wii U for cheap, though. It's not very picky about them.

I've read the Wii U doesn't really like vusb sticks and tends to have loading problems with them.
If op does get an external hard drive he might also need a y cable if it's not externally powered. Nintendo was cheap with those usb ports and they don't supply enough power unless you use two.
