The S&K special stages seem hard at first, but then you realize they're more on-rails than the Sonic 3 ones. The only tricky parts is when you need to use the bumpers to to back and change direction, but other than that they're pretty easy, although they may take a few tries at first until you learn the patterns, so some trial and error is required.
The S3 stages are easier because there's more error margin.
The only way they would be hard is if you didn't know that you can turn the blue spheres into rings, collecting every blue sphere and turning them into red spheres would be hard mode.

The special stages are the same though. The only difference if you get the previous 7 emeralds is that there's a sort of hub where you can select which emerald you get, but the stages themselves are the same IIRC:

Sonic 3 special stages used to irritate the fuck out of me when I was 5 for having such an easy failure state. The key to beating them, I found out years later, is to imagine Sonic and Tails as an immobile point on a freely-spinning globe. You're actually rotating the planet in cardinal directions, rather than the characters running along the top of it where the camera is fixed. Like an inverted hamster wheel in 4 directions.
It just works, trust me.
If you want to talk real casual filters - I would say "PC exclusive" - The Sims And Farmville notwithstanding.

Gonna say hardware drivers, if you're new to PC games. While cloud auto updates have made game updates almost effortless, you still have to keep Windows and all your hardware relatively updated if you want DirectX to work with your new video card. Windows 7 requires a shitton of updates every time I reinstall the OS. Fucking nonfree OS forcing me into piracy with its onetime activations voided by malware and hardware changes...

The Sonic Rush special stages become trivial when you realize you can just pause, place your stylus where you want Sonic to appear next, and when you press pause again he'll just instantly appear where you're already pressing down on the touchpad.
