What's the best looking NES game?
>>
Super Mario 3 maybe?
>>
Kirby's Adventure without a doubt.
>>
kirby, little samson, also mario is missing used a downgraded SMW sprite since it came out so late
>>

Battletoads. Not even kidding, it's artstyle was god-tier.

You'd have to really show this game in motion to appreciate it. It's so smooth and well animated.
>>

Anything other than a Mega Man title is a lie.
>>
>>320568425
He does have a point.

>>320568787
Mighty Final Fight and Gargoyle's Quest II easily outclass the Mega Man games as far as Capcom graphical standards go.
>>
>>320568690
wish that was released in the west.

finna emulate it soon though.
>>
>>320565394
I liked Metal Storm. But Irem knew how to pull all the stops when it came to making beautiful and visually active games.
>>
>>320568932
>Gargoyle's Quest II

I'll give you that Mighty Final Fight was easy on the eyes but didn't have half the design ingenuity of the Mega Man games. An unfortunate drawback of Mega Man's intricate characters and backgrounds, however, was flickering and slowdown in certain parts of the game.
>>
Most games look better in motion desu
>>
>>320567096
Battletoads and Double Dragon was amazing, I thought. Lots of tricks to get effects to show up on the NES, it was mindboggling that so many techniques went into the game.

Konami's old licensed games had awesome spritework and animations.

The Tiny Toons and Animaniacs games on the SNES/Genesis looked really good too.

>>
>>320571940
Nah, not the thumbnail, where the video starts when I posted it. Although in the thumbnail, the bars below the player in motion do have a 3D looking effect. Obviously, it's just a 3 or 4 frame animation that gives the illusion of rotating pipes by having them get smaller as they get closer to their edge, but it's still neat.
>>
>>320568787
I like Mega Man but aside only 4 - 6 looked good and they were still outclassed by other games
>>
>>320571165
watching this made me wonder why a game with so much technology was never mainstream enough to get more than just 1 sequel.

like literally, this game has more going on than anything made back then.

when doing the hover bike area, the game gets as close to 3D as Nes was gonna get.

tons of different animations while fighting. each enemy got attacked differently, like those chicks who get their hair pulled and slammed twice, being able to jump onto the security cameras, RAPPELING DOWN AREAS, throwing Pipe bombs back into a room to blow a guy up, this game had everything.

I remember getting one of those giant hearts but something hit me and killed me as my life was being fulled.
>>
>>320572552
Mega Man 3 was the pinnacle of Mega Man's visual fidelity. The later titles just had different set-pieces with the same design philosophies.

I've personally not played an NES game that looked better than Mega Man.
>>
>>320572405
Parallax scrolling. It was mostly used for skylines and other background effects
>>
>>320572602
It also had versions on the SNES and Genesis.
>>
>>320571820

What's your point?

I enjoyed the first one better too but Return was just as fun.

None of the other versions looked as good as the NES version too. Both the Genesis and the SNES versions looked like ass.
>>
>>320572850
>I've personally not played an NES game that looked better than Mega Man.

Probably because you've only played Mega Man which invalidates your opinion.
>>
>>320572926
yeah, i owned the one on Snes, i always made it to the level where you descend down a tree, made it past that once but i dont even remember the lvl beyond that, still loved the game to death though.
>>
Definitely Little Samson
>>
Remember when games weren't downgraded, and customers weren't given inferior products if there were bigger bucks elsewhere?
>>
>>320571165
Battletoads was always creative with perspective.
Remember the last level with the spinning tower?
>>
>>320573953

No?
>>
>>320572926
That's what makes it surprising. With a Genesis and SNES version, you'd think the devs would half-ass the NES version because they couldn't carry over things they did on later systems to an older one. Instead, they deliver a quality game on the NES and still improve on it for a later console as well.
>>
>>320574235
found the underage and/or contrarian
>>
>>320573953

No you don't mind shit

This thread is picking the best examples.

All of the best games combined don't even come close to all the shit games released on the NES.
>>
>>320570984
this is incredible
takes me back.
>>
>>320573460
Except you're wrong. Castlevania, Ghosts 'N Goblins, Final Fight, Battletoads, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Ninja Gaiden, and Kid Icarus are all other games I've played on the system. None of them look as good as Mega Man imo.
>>
>>320574362

Hurt your feelings much?

The rare time some underdog development team does something wonderful is outshone by the hundreds of times that some cash-in was spat out just to fulfill some contract to make x number of games for a platform in exchange for rights to develop AAA titles for said console.

But you go on and keep cherry picking history to fit your narrative while conveniently forgetting the deluge of shit that has always been flooding every console since the beginning.

some of the graphics posted here are gross. here is the correct answer

>>>/vr/
You're topic is too vague, do you mean graphical power, style, a mixture of both, personal preference? Define your terms fuckwad that doesn't know about /vr/.

Anyway:
Summer Carnival '92 Recca, Battletoads, Kirby, Crisis Force, Metal Storm, Super Mario Bros 3, Street Fighter 2010, Castlevania III.
>>
>>320582196
I should have made the OP less objective-sounding. I just mean personal preference.

and /vr/ is too slow
>>
>>320582196
Also, I should have mentioned that >>320567568
is spot on from many standpoints, it has graphical horsepower, style, and very smooth and satisfying gameplay to boot. Also it had enhancements to its sound, with a special chip present in many later NES games.
>>
>>320570984
The best part of watching this intro is that the sound effects and music starts playing in your head.
>>
Little Samson - great, characterful sprites with exremely fluid animation and beautifully detailed backgrounds with more colour than is logically possible. Also, I really love that jump animation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WFidUaK-WT8
Recca - amazing in motion, amazing animation and effects https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfY79-3AdGY
Mega Man 5/6 - parallaxing backgrounds? in my NES platformer? plenty of cool tech and visual showoffery, screen-filling bosses etc.
Battletoads - RARE being wizards. the 3D scrolling tower level especially is just fucking wizardry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvV0DE1itWA
The Japanese Version of Castlevania 3 - THAT FUCKING SOUNDTRACK OH MY GOD IT'S BEAUTIFUL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoLUYjM89mQ

Little Nemo: The Dream Master

Posting a single motionless screenshot doesn't do it justice and this isn't its best looking stage but this game really knew how to use its limited palette. The first act of the final stage in particular looks fantastic.

Somewhere in my family's home movies are some short stories I made with that thing, recorded with a camera aimed at the TV.
