Coleco was behind some of the earliest attempts to bring video games to your living room, with mildly successful consoles like the ColecoVision in 1982. Like many game companies at the time, Coleco went bankrupt in the late '80s. However, it was reformed in 2005, and now it's announcing its first new console in decades: the Coleco Chameleon, a modern machine that will play games stored on plastic cartridges.

so, what does /v/ think? can hipsters alone save this idea?

No, this is a retarded idea and will do horribly.

>>
Will it let me play Android quality games on my TV?

This looks like a mixture of an Atari Jaguar at the top and back and a Sega Genesis Model II at the front.

Why? Drives are easily going to hold more data then cd's, blue-ray or not.

It could probably work pretty well. With modern technology, you could hold more data on flash storage than discs.

Flash drives are easily viable for games bra.
They load faster than other memory.
They arent as shitty as 10 years ago.
>>
it's a nice idea, but any game from that era can easily just be played on an emulator by anyone who still cares about them.
>>
>>320540183
It's going to be a niche hipster device, and it's likely it will do just as bad as the Ouya, if not worse.

If they pack a quality x64 based APU in the thing with high-clockspeed RAM, and the cartridges are just basically fat 32GB+ flash drives; we might see some quality games. However, these games will likely be ones that have been out(i.e. Memecraft, Fallout/Skyrim, CoD, and so on.)

This is true.

I guarantee you that you could put Fallout 4 on a cartridge today with superior quality to a physical copy.

The problem is the price.

You do realize that the ColecoVision was by far the best second gen console when it came to specs right? While the Atari 2600 and Intellivision had bloops and bleeps, the ColecoVision had NES style graphics and sound.

Incidentally, it's also a shadow-conspiracy from Sony. They found out that the NX is going to be using cartridges from one of their corporate spies and are attempting to beat Nintendo to market and undermine their credibility. ColecoVision is a sacrificial pawn.

The only people this would hurt if it got big are indie or small time dev studios who want to publish on consoles because they have to pay more to get their game physically made and plus it will cost other devs more money to port to this specific console and to print physical copies for it.

Here's the problem with this idea; it will be emulation based.

That was also part of their marketing campaign. That's a real ad. They put that up for real, and were serious about it.
>>
>>320540778
Probably, but there is still a large profit margin on the manufacturing costs. Even is they sell the games at $50, it would probably only cost around $20 for productions and shipping per unit. I'm not an expert in this kind of stuff and I'm not pretending to be, but it seems like it could work.

This gets me thinking. Couldn't Nintendo make a killing of they literally remade N64s, controllers and cartridges? How much would the thing cost to make with today's technology? I don't think you thought this shit through.

Let's assume you have an N64, and something inside it breaks. You know this guy who's more than competent with electronics, so you bring it over to him.

He opens the case up, takes one look inside, and then asks if you have about 60 bucks to cover the replacement of some ancient parts that aren't actually in production anywhere in the world anymore, and you can only find them pulled from other N64s.

Why the fuck would you make a modern version of something ancient and outdated? If they were to make such a machine, it would be using modern day off the shelf components, and every game would be emulated and a digital download.

There already exists a very big market for what you seek, by the way. It's called 'the second hand videogame market.' For less than 100 dollars, you can have an N64, with four controllers, and some trash games. Just one click away on the internet auction site of your choice, your local flea market, or your country's version of goodwill stores.

Baka.

The only game I enjoyed on android is TWEWY, which is, surprise, a DS port.

Games like Bloodborne, Smash 4, Infamous and Mario Kart 8 wouldn't be done on mobile, not only because the hardware is weaker, but also because they defacto come without physical buttons and developpers want to reach the widest audience possible.
