A good story can carry a game with mediocre or simplistic gameplay and visuals, such as Undertale (to name a recent and entirely fitting example) in the same way that it can carry a book where the technical quality of the writing isn't as good as it could be. If the desire to see what happens next is great enough then the player will still go through some not-so-great gameplay bits and have a positive experience with the game at the end of the day.
But the reverse is equally true. A game's story can be all over the place and totally nonsensical, but if the gameplay is enjoyable then the the player will keep on going to get more of it.

Super Mario World for example, it has a simple story but the good thing is, it is self aware, it knows it's just a simple story and it doesn't take itself seriously. and everything about it is amazing, the gameplay is fluid, the music is groovy. Story is an important department when it comes to games, but only when your game is supposed to do so, when it takes itself seriously.
