Ehh I was always under the impression that during the Age of Technology (tm) humanity reached Star trek levels of tech and knowledge, and then beyond (almost/maybe even Necron levels). Why you end up with stupid relics like time traveling ships and stuff from that time period. Tau have not reached Humanity's peak by a longshot, but a lot of their current tech is more sensible/efficient than the Imperium's conventional gear.

Not exactly. There's lore for short warp jumps being made by ships and it's safer and easier than long warp jumps but they're never really used like that. This seems like a liberty taken by the game based on that. Still, GW might make it a thing since they're trying to revive BFG.

The weapons have always been represented with a bit of artistic liberty, since most people wouldn't appreciate watching their 20000 man infantry blob get completely wrecked by 10 space marines. These are games first and foremost, and the objective is for all sides to be fun and viable against each other despite what the Canon might say. Same goes for fleet battles here as well.
