Everytime I see this kind of shit pop up, it goes precisely nowhere. And by that I mean new tech. What happened to this thing? Did it just quietly die in the night or was it a scam all along?

Huh? They never accepted donations and only ever been funded by private investors.
>>
>>320493331
is it really that time of year again?
>>
>>320493631

It wasn't a scam, it's just useless for games.
>>
>>320493631

Usually they get bought out by a big company. The company either integrates the tech into their own somewhere down the line, or it turns out to be shit and the company takes the hit. Either way it freaks out their competition and makes them uneasy because of not knowing.
>>
>>320493331

inb4 that one guy who vehemently defends this.

>>320493631

They were ridiculed in the games industry because this technology is basically useless for animations. You can't make games with them.
But the technology is good at (I can't remember the word. Those people who scan terrain and buildings) and they found a footing in that industry.
>>
>>320493331
I remember this. They released a demo a little while ago that was like 5gb or something silly. You could explore a church, and the suburb of the city I live in, it was really creepy.
>>
>>320493631

they did a complete 360 on video games and instead used the tech to map cities or something

>>
>>320493982
You live a church ?
>>
>>320493756
yeah pretty much, it's only for scanning things in and displaying it
heres some real technology https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpT6MkCeP7Y
>>
>>320494040
There were 3 possible areas you could explore in unlimited detail. A church, my suburb, and something else I can't remember.
>>
>>320493756
It's not useless, most devs do not have a need for the tech because their tech is basically "3d prerendered backgrounds" and the "meta" is all about scenes with optimized amount of polycounts and dynamic lighting.
You could very well integrate their stuff with 3d polys and what not for characters or everything that needs to be easily computed like physics.
Let's not forget what happened when it got a lot of attention though. Every big voices of gaming and even the hack that is Notch and Carmack who was clueless about the tech tore it up and passed it off as a sick joke. Meanwhile the actual CEO got in contact with people from the geospace industry and adapted his tech to suit their need and has a quasi monopoly in that industry.

>A complete 360.

Hahaha... Fuck, I needed that.
>>
Its useless for vidya but great for full 3D maps of cities etc.
>>
Couldn't this be using in something like a city builder?

Granted a fairly static and lifeless city builder.
>>
>>320493915
Thanks anon, glad to hear they didn't fail.
>>
>>320494026
So they're doing video games after all ?
>>
>>320494343

He means they dropped that shit hard because the gaming industry is fucked and they made fat bux in the geospace industry.
>>
>>320494483
I get it. I was just ridiculing him for saying "they did a complete 360"
>>
>>320494161
modern games like physics and animations. This technology was only useful for static objects in a world. It looks very nice and enough games these days use collision geometry separate from the visual geometry anyway, at best it's most useful application would be making huge worlds with amazing draw distance. It's just a visual trick though, and the only assets that could be governed by it are those that aren't physics driven or animated.
>>
>>320494572

Fucking hell, my brain still misfires every time I see 360. Walk away with that shit.

you're missing the point that they're not mutually exclusive
You can have your static world like pretty much every games with baked lightning before 2004, lay out the hitboxes for the world and use your standards polys for characters animation and physics. You can still set static lightsource to dynamically illuminate those so they don't stick too much like a sore thumb compared to the background.
Not to mention the very limited GPU impact not having to render the entire background and being able to focus on stupididly high polycounts for shit that matters like character models/hair physics/procedural gameplay shit. Sky's the limit really.

For the Record their tech is really good for rendering GIS Laser Point data from laser scanners into something that can be viewed and loaded without taking a fucking year, Think of it as Google Street View except it's 3D and everything is made of points suspended in space.
