Ok there's like a ton of misinformation going around and shit in this thread

1) a firmware exploit would mean all previous games w/o such countermeasures are basically free games

2) "online only" DRM works, but only if you make the server handle game logic interaction. Think Diablo 3. If we don't have the code to "play" parts of the game, we're fucked. However, we can usually code out our own interactions if we have enough leeway (this is usually how WoW private servers work, as back in the day we didn't have access to the PvE mechanics bosses used, so we'd script our own). The problem with this is that although it will massively reduce piracy, it costs a SHIT ton, because you have to have servers manage this, and lag is impactful (and will lead to people getting pissed)

3) DRM authentication. Doesn't really work if you can block the servers in such things as hosts files. If people couldn't play the game without logging into a server, users will be fucking FURIOUS. It's doubtful companies would do this, and even if they did, pirates could potentially bypass it by coding a "crack" that hooks into the game and ignores it/tells it they're online. It depends on the game and what they would use, but it might not be worth it for a lot of games so Sony would "win"

Piracy will eventually happen for PS4 and anyone who thinks otherwise is retarded, will it be as good as the PS2 days? Definitely not, but it'll be something.

>>
>>320482828
You are incorrect my friend. Online drm will be the end of piracy

it could be rendered ver un-invasive.

for example one game would require you to connect online to access level 2

another game could require you to connect online just once after 15 minutes of gameplay

another could save games online only not on ps4

-----------------------------------------------

online drm is a tool that could be used in any way a devs chooses

too much work to patch each fuckin ps4 game...when each uses the online drm in a different fashion

keep dreamin cuck

>>
>>320483383
sony r more intelligent than americans (big surprise)

sony left it up to devs to implement ALWAYS online drm

M$ truly wanted to end piracy on their consoles after the 360 fail
>>
>>320482156
Yeah, but mostly because the PS4 is considered "gambling" by corrupt Brazil government and subject to a special tax. If the code they are using to dump the images is leaked you can probably use any old PC to pirate shit on PS4.
>>
>>320483150
>Online drm will be the end of piracy

I never said it wasn't. Please note my message here:
>"online only" DRM works, but only if you make the server handle game logic interaction.

Where I specifically say it works.

>it could be rendered ver un-invasive.
>for example one game would require you to connect online to access level 2

Ok, that wouldn't work at all because that's pretty much exactly how online drm authentication works currently.

>Load cracked exe of game
>Bypasses authentication

However, if you tie game logic to the server. So for instance you are fighting a boss, the game client will contact a server and say "hey, I (as a client) do not know the move this boss will use, I need you to tell me it" and then the server communicates "this is what will happen" and will send the client software a script to use, and that's the boss move. If games do that, then there is no bypass unless you get the code/script of what the boss/game does. You cannot usually intercept these scripts in plaintext because they're encrypted with private keys and maybe even obfuscated the code inside the client as well, to prevent further reverse engineering.

>another could save games online only not on ps4

Once again, a possibility but if you were to be able to hook an application into the PS4 that intercepts these packets and saves them locally on say a computer, then it's bunk.

If there is a kernel level exploit that allows exploitation in the form of running unsigned applications, games will get pirated. It's a fact. If we can run unsigned shit, we win everything up until they force online-only games that are server side manipulated in real time.

>too much work to patch each fuckin ps4 game

It is a lot of work, and many games may not get patched or cracked. But the same can be said about developing online only. If you tie game logic to a serverside connection, that is massive infrastructure you need to develop and use continually so all users can play the game
>>
>>320480760
>devs can implement always online drm if a firmwire ever happens
This is what cut the X1 from the competition, they will never do that.
>modern games already require latest firmwire
This was already a thing past gen.
>firmwire updates LITERALLY PHYICALLY alter the ps4 mobo thru destroying e-fuses
This is also nothing new. the x360 did it as well.
>>
e-fuses do not stop custom firmware

t. samsung knox
>>
>>320483150
>>320483615

Anyway it's doubtful 80% of game devs will do online-only game logic handling in their games. It's a ton of work, and people without stable/fast internet connections will bitch endlessly about it.

Piracy on the PS3/PS2 was not a huge problem, it was on the PSP (but mostly because Sony was really stupid). Even the DS/3DS's piracy was never a major problem. It's doubtful people will go to such lengths to prevent piracy by implementing online only drm in every single game published. It's just a ton of money, work, and time. They won't think it is worth it.
>>
And this is why no console will ever reach even half of PS2 or DS levels again
>>
>>320483501
>360 fail
I bought a 360 because of easier piracy and haven't bought a ps3 because piracy was a hassle
>>
>>320483678
Indeed, but they do stop firmware downgrading, wich means fixed exploits are outside your reach if you've ever updated past them or if you own a newer model.

Exactly
Why do companies insist on making uncrackable consoles?
Being easy to pirate is what led the playstation to being the giant it is in the first place
>>
>>320483964
Because otherwise publishers will boycott your console.

The videogame market got huge during the ps2 "era", during the ps1 it was still an average entertainment just for kids, publishers weren't nearly as big as today.

MS did not give a fuck, they literally packed PC hardware in a box and throw themselves on the market just to have a presence for the next gen, the xbox was literally filler.
>x360
You do know the console is actually uncracked to this very day, right ? Piracy is possible because someone fucked up with the DRM and you easily cheat it flashing the dvd drive, but efuses and their DRM are still working.
