Gearbox's Homeworld is 1 for 1 right now and Burch doesn't work for them anymore.

You're going to need better arguments than outdated memes.

That was not actually known up until now, because all you would see of them in cutscenes were humanoid profiles.
Another thing GB cocked up, never actually showing a full frontal view of the kushani/taidaani mystified them to a degree, and allowed people to make their mind about how they really looked.

the mysticism-based plot and retconning everywhere was complete garbage and everyone knows it.

the worst thing is that Cataclysm is treated as less than canonical when it maintained the tone of the original so much better.
>>
Holy shit, it looks like Ground Control meets Homeworld. I can't fucking wait.
>>
>>320473291
Isn't the only thing really retconned that instead of multiple cores there were only 3?
>>
>>320473182
>>320473272
it was the official sequel that Relic was forced to rush out the door a year before it was ready by Sierra.

the original Dust Wars game design sounds like it would have been substantially better in pretty much every way.
>>
>>320473291
Cataclysm isn't non-canon, but the source code for the game was lost a long time ago so they can never re-release or remaster it which means they kind of have to ignore it nowadays.
>>
At this point I am concerned about the potential lore rape, but the game play looks like it could be decent. The biggest problem with it being published by Gearbox is the initial price tag and DLC bullshit. And I still don't really want to give Gearbox money regardless, but I also don't want to punish Blackbird because of that if it is actually good.
>>
>>320473418
Oh well
It's not exactly one of those BIG fictional universes people spend all the free time obsessing over
>>
>>320473164
Because Blackbird's was working on this project as a separate IP that has now been re-purposed back into the original Homeworld IP (and before people get angry, Hardware: Shipbreakers was obviously set in the Homeworld universe).

Where have you been?
>>
>>320473486
I think pretty much everyone here hates gearbox to an extent, it's just that only some of us will bite the bullet on it, me included.
>>
>>320473418
It's true that Dust Wars would have been better. However, it's not like ME3. HW2 was still a really good game with a solid ending.
>>
I'm getting it, Gearbox be damned.

At least some of the unit functionality looks pretty neat. The massive baserunner with a runway on it is dope and judging from screenshots there's at least one instance of a desert dust-storm.

in principle, yeah, but when the plot is about getting all three magic mega-cores back together to unlock muh secret godship it kind of is more significant.

it makes most of the plot of HW1 nonsensical
> taidani let one of the three most powerful artifacts in the entire galaxy get send to Space Australia after they crush their Kushan foes.
> entire taidan empire just kind of fucks around after their enemies start using the unique mega-weapon again after a few thousand years
> bentusi don't treat kushan like anything special
>

>>320473480
that's kind of a load of shit.
a few of the original Relic/ND devs said in forums last year that they could re-create the missing Cataclysm logic in the order of weeks for the HW1 engine.
the actual problem is that GB's HW1 remaster is really just a rendered/UI-tweaked HW2 engine with the units and logic from HW1 grafted in rather poorly.
I bought the collection on release, and for the ~2 months that I still managed to care, the HW1 remaster was completely broken shit, where you couldn't even salvage enemy frigates without other ships shooting at them on the way back.

GB just didn't want to dedicate the resources to getting the HW1 remaster done competently, and they sure as fuck didn't feel like paying a whole lot more to try to get Cataclysm done, which was never as popular and would likely be even harder to graft onto the HW2 engine.

I agree. Not even tactics or formations worked in the slightest.

I do not understand how Gearbox didn't get ripped to sheds over this. The remaster of HW1 was supposed to be the main selling point of the bundle, and it wasn't even fully playable.

I quit it at around the the kamikaze asteroid mission since I just couldn't stand the lack of working formations.

what are you talking about its god damn terrible phoned in trash, the only worthwhile part is getting the original game in a state where you can play it on a relatively modern system with no issues, the remastered HW1 section is ass, reasons are as follows:

-No Fuel
-Easy mode salvage in a game where this was already easy
-Formations are fucked
-Stances are fucked
-No more random battle chatter
-I didnt get there but I have no fucking idea what they did with nebula shit because the only way you had a chance was to nuke fuel pods, because swarmers were just BETTER than anything you had but they had no fuel, with no fuel in the game the kadeshi are now an unstoppable juggernaut of destruction, or theyve been nerfed making the campaign easy modo

Dont tell me that remaster is good

What do you guys think would be interesting mechanics for a Homeworld game?

I always thought it'd be neat to have one-shot hologram decoys that you could send out and bait enemies into attacking. Something that would appear on sensors as a ship until it was fired on.

Also some kind of telescopic recon probe, that worked on line of sight instead of proximity. If you haven't noticed I'm a sucker for ruse strategy.
>>
>>320475305
>I keep on hearing the remaster is horrible

Well they are god games and playable on modern systems but the remake HW1 is nothing like the original. They used HW2's engine for it and it fundamentally changed a lot of things about it.

the HW1 re-build legacy version technically works, but they didn't even add new video modes, so you're stuck in like 1280x1024 or some bullshit for the highest resolution.

If you want to be able to play original homeworld again on a current computer (which you cant if you still own a disk copy as it wont run on windows 7 or 8 or 10 or what have you) Then your best bet is buying the remaster, which will give you original HW1, and HW2, and remastered HW1 and HW2, out of these, only remastered HW1 is a shit sandwhich, the rest is solid, and you get the advantage of steam mod support for remastered HW2 which is about exactly the same but a bit prettier than original HW2. So take from that what you will.

Fighters always went down quick unless they were a wall of Defenders going up against something not using flak and the like, or a ball of bombers striking an isolated target. Both strategies still worked fine for me in the remaster.

Even if they are weaker in the remaster, the removal of fuel changes their role from combat support to long-distance interception and deterrent; as the fastest class of ship in the game once you remove their range limitation they naturally become about interfering with resource gathering and the like. If they could do that AND also pull off a frontal assault on their own, there would be little purpose for the larger ships.

It's fine if they really WANT to do this. Then they'll take more care. Unless time constraints fuck them, of course, but, so far, that doesn't seem to be the case (extremely little news in a long, LONG while?).
>>
>>320477224
The trailer looks good so far.
>>

It's been said before here but Deserts was originally a separate IP called Hardware: Shipbreakers made by some of the original devs, not set exactly in the HW universe and therefore designed with different mechanics in mind.

It was only recently integrated back into the Homeworld IP after the relative success of Remastered.
>>
Why is Cataclysm so hard to find?
>>
>>320477385
It was a separate IP because they had no rights for the Homeworld. They also said that they were going to make Shipbreakers as a prequel to Homeworld no matter what and deal with legal issues later.
>>
Fucking loved cataclysm felt like a horror RTS game, best homeworld even if it was kinda easy.
>>
>>320477572
Hardware wasn't a true prequel. You can see in this trailer that it was centered around "prospectors" on a planet called LM-27. It borrowed themes from Homeworld but this is clearly a different universe.

>Burch doesn't work for them anymore.

Not only that, Gearbox is only publishing Deserts of Kharak.

The developers are Blackbird Interactive.

>it wasn't a real prequel because it had different names in it
Did you even read what I just said?
>>
>>320478060
Which is (most of? all?) the original Relic crew.
>>

It was great. Start as a mining clan, come back after all that running as a fighting clan.

Seeing the Bentusi freak out what really sold it for me though.
>>
So is this like a new RTS or something?
>>
>>320478084
Did you even watch the video? Devs stated very explicitly at PAX this year that Hardware was originally its own IP, until Gearbox offered the title.

Nobody in their right mind would just make a game as a prequel and "deal with the legal issues later", are you kidding me?
>>
Homeworld is perhaps the only game I don't remember being so shit
I pirated the remakes and holy fuck it was shitty
Maybe I was young
>>
>New Homeworld
>made by same people
>but plays different
why?

Also, holy shit man porting HW1 with HW2 engine isn't a good idea. Fuck you bitchford.
>>
>>320478608
It was a solid game for its time, however it also laid the basis for a lot of space based RTS stuff. So now that we have all these things as pretty common to that setting/genre, going back and looking at it makes it seem somewhat basic.

The remaster for HW1 though suffers from a lack of it actually being rebuilt around the HW1 engine. It is just the HW2 engine, with some duct tape to cobble together what was needed to make it seem like HW1. And it failed in some respects which is why it feels shit. Also GB don't care about it enough to fix it.

'Kharak is burning' is still one of the most memorable scenes in gaming history.

3D RTS space sucks anyway

You suck.

What did Homeworld 1 to deserve getting his story retconed by 2 and now Deserts of Kharat?

Wops, Kharak i mean.
>>
>>320484646
It was good. Which means that as much money must be milked from the IP as possible.

That being said I am still on the fence about Deserts until I know the full extent of any lore abuse. I just want the gameplay to be good because the RTS genre needs it.
>>
>>320486157
I still say they just need to change the story to be about Makaan and the Vaygr and it will be less of a lore rape.
>>
>>320486524
There is that much confusion around what it was originally intended to be versus what it became and what it is now, that I wouldn't have put it past GB to have strong armed them in the end to make it this lore rapey for brand recognition to push sales. GB would certainly have had the money to tie them up in court, or possibly had enough of a case that they could have won, so it might have been a case of them dictating to Blackbird, rather than them being nice and just letting them use the IP if they want and offer to publish. I mean I want to believe there is still some good in GB, but Pitchford is a cunt and they have a shitty track record of shitty behavior.

Borderlands 2 was a damn fine game, even for single player.

Until they "nerfed" the bee shield because multiplayer faggots cried too much instead of, you know, kicking people who used it.
