What was broken? And please don't say Pokemon movesets because that can be applied to every Pokemon game ever made. You can't balance 150 Pokemon. Let alone the 800+ Pokemon we have now.
And HG/SS had its own problems as a remake. Mostly being on the engine for D/P. I'll never understand why people worship Gen II so much when it took forever to actually get through the main game.

The first four levels are a remake of the original Donkey Kong. Then it opens up into 9 worlds of a crazy puzzle platformer (the added content).
Plus, its called just Donkey Kong. Hinting that it was the spiritual successor to the original. Don't get me wrong, I agree its something totally different. But a remake can be a drastic change over the original game. Just look at the ongoing development of FFVII remake.
I think ORAS is the best Pokemon game in the last three gens. And its only flaw was not having the Battle Frontier, but improved every other thing. Including breeding, online trading/battling, water routes and even the main story.

My problem with ORAS (and X and Y) is that they don't feel like a sprawling, open adventure.
They feel like a roller coaster.
I tested this in both games, NOT ONCE IN EITHER, can you leave a city without beating the gym/dealing with team magma/aqua/flare.
You never get to go off the beaten path, you never get to
Something like the Seafoam Islands or even (Kanto) Route 13, 14 and 15 do NOT exist in either of those games in any meaningful form outside the post game. Something off the beaten path or at the very least entirely optional.

To be fair, Gen V did this even worse. You were railroaded into only going to one town. Then watching tons of cutscene events in the town and defeating the gym leader before some sleeping Pokemon or dumb NPC finished 'cleaning' the road. Then when you are finally let out of the city...more cutscenes and game triggers on the road.
I almost didn't finish Black 2 because of how bad it was. ORAS on the other hand had less cutscenes. And when an area opened, you could explore it freely. None of this 'Route 211 is blocked' crap.

Plus the ability to see Pokemon rustling in the grass instead of just blindly running through the grass. The game has a lot of those little effects that improve it. Including in town. I mean, Pokemon as a series is never going to surpass Dragon Quest in how detailed a town is. But in ORAS, searching trash cans or random doors actually does something. And there was some towns with a lot more buildings than in the original R/S/E. That one town (forgot name) now has a whole second story to it with hotel rooms. And each room has someone in it that tells you more about the world. That wasn't in Emerald.
