Matador's more of a wake up call than being genuinely hard. Up until that point you're pretty safely coasting along. Then you get blindsided by this fucker and now you have to assemble a party just to fuck him over. On later runs (or if you're a series vet and know how to play) he's a chump but the very first time he's a pretty brutal wake up call on SMT's mechanics.

MAG is useless on the main hero
VIT is important for surviving early game as you'll be alone for a bit for the most part.
AGI for gun attacks/attack speed(attack speed can be really important for stunlocking bosses), STR for sword attacks. You won't get a gun until after the first dungeon though.
Only raise INT to about 10 on the player character, anymore isn't really useful for demon negotiation.
LUK is useful all around.
Basically pump VIT and STR up a bit at first then diversify if you want.
