i5 here. Currently rolling a 4440 not even overclocked

Here's my current speccy.

With the exception of Win10 fucking up with my HD60 capture device (which appears to have been patched now) I have to say, the i5, even in its intensive usages are very much worth it.

Skylake non K processors can be overclocked by increasing the baseclock and core voltage. Still not as good an over clocker as the unlocked ones, but most people seem to have been able to push their i5 6400 from 2.7 to at least 4.0 Ghz. Which makes it a really good bang for your buck cpu.
>>
>>320419597
i bought a 2500k like 4 years ago and it worked out really well. IDK how expensive they are now but i definitely feel like it was worth the money.
>>
>>320422560
The older processors are definitely still usable and I would still probably be using my i5-3570k if my mobo didn't melt. The only real reason to transition to skylake for example is the newer connectors like pci-e and m.2 and higher numbers of sata 3.0 and ddr4 is cool but pointless since it literally doesn't make a difference in games.

The 6XXX series (Skylake, right?) is kinda overpriced.

Not him, but 750ti has been THE budget card for the past couple years.

For starters, it's small. Second, it does not require external power connections, as it takes all its power from the PCI-E port. This means it runs well even on very weak PSUs.
Performance is quite impressive as well, with one of the earliest triumphs of the 750ti being the demonstration video this one guy posted on Youtube, where he ran GTA5 at 1080p, Very High -presets, and clocked steady 35fps on average. And the card was teamed up with mere Intel i3 + 4GB RAM.
And the best part? It costs 100$, sharp, at lowest!

Just notice that 750ti and 750 are two different card, with the Ti model being superior.

for your mom

ive yet to see anyone on /v/ have a decent overclock at all

>>
So if I was making a pc over a significant period of time, say over 1 year, the last 2 components I should buy is the cpu and the graphic's card right? everything else stays basically the same.
>>

Sadly i live in a shithole, the price of 750ti is almost the price of 950/60.
The "budget" card is a r7 260x
>>
tl;dr It seems I lost the silicon lottery, badly.

i7 5930k @ 3.5GHz
H110i GTX
32gb DDR4-2133 @ 1.2v
2xSLI 980TI
Win 7

Overclocking;
4.3GHz @ 1.25v
2133MHz @ 1.2v
Seems to be my only true stable result.

4.5 and 4.4 both seemed stable even at 1.3v each respectively.
I could pass aida65 for 4+ hours each. OCCT VGX Linwell tests would pass for 1hour as well.
Temps would hit 80c but that's normal for stress testing. HyperPi would pass 32m just fine.

It was only when I played CS:GO would my computer either lock up completely or when changing maps on CS:GO the game would close and go to desktop with no errors or hard freeze.

Lowering it to 4.3GHz @ 1.2v is stable. Temps are only getting to 60.

Am I really unfortunate with the lottery or am I missing something?
>>
>>320427328
i'm not sure how your overclock would scale if you were at 1.3v or so???
>>
>>320427295
Mobo and CPU need to be compatible.
You should start with those and then add to that.
>>
>>320422379
what your budget?
From the shitiest from best
Fx6300(If you is a very poorfag/lives in shit country), I3 haswell and for the last a I5 non K
For the next game to come in next years, a I5 will be good. If wants a K model, remember to buy a decent mobo + cpu fan
>>
>>320427498
950 is shaping up to become the 750ti's successor, with some of the models similarly utilizing only the port's energy, yet providing a good 30% performance improvements.

>The "budget" card is a r7 260x
wouldn't personally touch anything THAT low even with a ten foot long stick. Especially if it's made by AMD to boot.
You'd be better off buying a couple years old, used GPU instead.

So yeah, let's re-phrase that: 750ti is the perfect budget-card for someone seriously considering playing modern games on his system.

Awesome. I've been making my build really gradually so I'm always thinking about the possibility that my parts that I bought earlier won't hold up. Waiting for Pascal to get a GPU tho, was going to get a 390 but then I found out that AMD GPU's don't get driver support so that'll be my last part

It's a fine CPU.
Overclock that sumbitch.
My 9370 is at 5.2ghz. I could go higher, but I would need to upgrade my watercooler. It does make my room nice and toasty, but living in a cold area I don't mind.

So, how is the I5-4460?

I will upgrade in a year or 2 to a I5-4790K or a I5-4690K when they drop in price.

Buy a budget GPU like a 750 ti and just save up for a 980, you'll be better off in the long run.
>>
>>320446291
That's actually a pretty good idea, I'll be fine playing older games and emulating PSP and Gamecube until Pascal comes out anyway

This but get 750ti and wait for Pascal. Not super impressed with my 970 desu which isn't far off from a 980. Then again, I upgraded from a 4gb 770.

>You don't need more than an i3

I wish /g/ would get deleted. I'm tired of their god awful advice going around and ruining peoples builds.

>Thinking more mhz makes a difference
>Not understanding that the increase IPC of a newer CPU blows his higher overclock out of the water

It needs to come with a disclaimer.
You don't need more than an i3.*

*As long as the most you're doing with your system is taking desktop screenshots, shitposting on 4chan, and watching anime.

Planning on building an i7 5820k system in Jan.

I expect it will last me around the same time as my current i7 920 did.

I have an all in one computer.
With a 2010 laptop CPU, one that is weak as fuck for years, is that or nothing.
For 5 years i have used this shit as my main 4chan machine.
Its a fuckhuge upgrade getting the I5-4460 alone.

>Gettting a new CPU each year
Also 2 generations? 1151 and what else?
