>decide to play System Shock 2 because everyone says it's an amazing horror game
>loud techno music starts playing

WTF?!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0bL7I_eWryI
>>
Well, I can't say the music was bad on its own, but it definitely didn't really fit the game's mood very well.
>>
>>320375913
There's a healthy mix of fast paced and darker ambient pieces.

I fucking love them

It's not really a horror game. Anyone who told you that is an idiot.
>>
It's not horror. It does get tense at times though.
And it's not techno, it's dnb.
>>
>>320377267
you can't say shit like the monkeys and the cyborg midwives wasn't pretty fucking horrifying

Shock 1 wasn't horror, but 2 sure was
>>
>>320375913
SS2 is too scary for me.
>>
>Limited ammo
>Enemies respawn
Terrible game.
>>
i always thought the hard techno and drum and bass stuff didn't quite fit
i like ss1 soundtrack more it's just groovier
>>
>>320375913
play the game and post yfw you see the final cutscene
>>
>>320378062
you fucking mong the ammo is limited because the entire fun of the gameplay is about resource management and finding the most efficient way to play with the limited tools and resources you have access to

if the ammo wasn't limited you'd just fucking shoot at everything and it would kill the game

why don't people understand game design, fucking hell
>>
>>320378290
But enemies respawn which makes limited ammo an issue.
>>
>>320378384
ammo isn't limited because respawning enemies drop ammo, you mong
>>
>>320378384
enemies drop credits and ammo
you can also buy ammo though you can get through the game easily without ever buying anything...
>>
>>320378384
it's only an issue if you're not navigating around the environments effectively and you're shit at managing your resources

not only that but basically the only enemies that respawn are the weaker ones which don't require resources for you to kill
>>
>>320375913
Personally I find this much preferable to how every AAA game these days needs to have a Hans Zimmer movie soundtrack.

The soundtrack is cohesive throughout which, to me, really drives the sci-fi setting home.
>>
>>320378808
I like the soundtrack too anon, I think it fits just fine

but then again I think the music in the thieves guild is fine too so maybe I'm a fag https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2w-d0UJD3o8
>>
>>320378808
Loud ass fucking techno is bullshit anyway. It does not fit the game at all.
>>
Do people actually defend this soundtrack? It doesn't fit at all, and it ruins the atmosphere.
>>
I like it, you come back there a lot for the chem storage/skilling up so it's always refreshing to hear, really perks you up.

It's just as much of a horror game as Half-Life, it's eerie at times but it's not really a horror game, most older games get mistaken with horror games just because of empty corridors and lack of sound effects, it's just because of technical reasons it felt like that.

>>
>>320379021
As many have stated, it's not techno, also, if your issue with it is that it's loud, go into the sound options and turn it down.

You're entitled to your opinion as always but I don't see why it's unfitting in the game, it fits far better than for example, taking the typical way out and torturing string instruments the entire way through the game.

It's a sci-fi cyberpunk horror game you dolt. And it's not "techno", the majority of the soundtrack is dark ambient with a couple of drum and bass tracks thrown in when things get intense. It fits perfectly.

There's a mouselook mod that works really well. I couldn't play it either until I got the mod. Glad I did, because it's the most innovative FPS I've ever played. It is my humble opinion that the games music is awesome. This comes from a blues/metal enthusiast.

That aside, SS2 has a respawning system in place. I do believe it is meant to be played with melee in mind, and gives ample warning for that. That said, you can hoard ammo till you can hold no more.

Not sure if the game was supposed to be scary but it was can get tense and keep you on the edge of your seat.
It has also been the inspiration for some of the best games that ever came out.

It is a solid 9/10 and still holds up to this day.

I am 35 years old and I love this game.

Its not really that difficult to manage / have more than enough ammo
>>
Audiologs are the best thing about it and a definite improvement over SS1's audiologs.

Melee is simply better, the repair and maintenance shit was truly horrible game design.
>>
>>320376832

>>
>>320382129
You pretty much need melee for those last two fucking levels.

OSA here. We are better than both of you. Don't mind me, I'll just be invisible, resistant to toxins and rads, teleporting around, and killing even the toughest of baddies with 1 or 2 shots.
>>
>>320382129
>I do believe it is meant to be played with melee in mind
melee is a big factor in early to mid game

the hybrids have a really slow windup that is easy to avoid until they get gun arms and then you can still knock them the fuck out by hugging corners

you can also melee service bots and some turrets until they're at 15% hp and finish them off with a single bullet to save loadsa ammo (just don't try that on protocol droids for obvious reasons)

everything else is just researching weaknesses ASAP to start doing increased damage and conserving ammo by only taking shots when absolutely necessary
>>
>>320382431
OSA melee builds are the best.
Also, tfw creating walls.
>>
>>320379021
It did in the year it came out.
>>
>>320382307

I'm not sure how those bots in UT fared against the competition but considering there were like 7 levels of skill from retard to shitstomping godlike I guess they must've been impressive at the time.

I got introduced to the game in a netcafe, people playing it and shittalking endlessly

That was some dope ass way to play it, I won tourneys there later.
>>
>>320382518
They're plenty of ammo early-mid game and you'll steamroll with a decently high firearms skill. Or whatever it was called.

>>320382587

>tfw SS3 will have shitty generic orchestral music like every other modern game

The Mac version's music wasn't dynamic, therefore inherently inferior

I used to tout around its greatness in SS2 threads all the time but pretty much always got shouted down by people complaining that it was bad because they couldn't figure out how to play it.

Now that there's a gog release far more people share the correct opinion

This garbage is what people class as noise? Rhythmless trash that just sounds like a load of noises crammed together?
Sums up western developers quite well I suppose.

The soundtrack was cool and all, but I still preferred it to be turned off. Sneaking around in creepy hallways and leaning round the corners to check for hostiles with all the ambient noises was more to my liking. I felt more immersed in the game environment that way.

>barely any health left, and no ammo
>be standing on a second level platform with these fuckers walking around below
>guess correctly by thinking that enemies react to the noise caused by dropped items, like in Deus Ex
>drop useless item on elevator platform
>they gather to the noise source
>send the elevator down on them

Man I love this glorious fucking game.

That's one of the benefits with SS2 being developed in a stealth game engine.

How did Ken Levine ruin SS2?
