I just don't understand, /v/
I just overheard a few people saying how they were moved by this game, how it really means something to them.
I've played 3 hours of this shit and thought "eh, I guess it's alright" and pretty much stopped since.
I'm not saying that video games can't have an impact, because I think certainly Deus Ex, Xenoblade and a few others had an impact. Hell, I even teared up a bit at the end of SM64.
But why undertale? What is it about this game?

It's a narrative focused game. Lots of attention to detail. It surprises the player a lot by playing around the player's expectations and varies game mechanics in interesting ways every now and then.

Here's a real answer to your question OP
The game is narrative trash until its last hour of the True Pacifist and Genocide playthrough. Specifically, the final fight on Pacifist is pretty well done, with solid music. And the entire Genocide run is actually both challenging and surprising. And its also where the game hides a very well done soundtrack.
That's why. 95% of the game is trash. The last 5% is easter eggs and endings.
I don't think I've ever seen such a memegame prosper so long on /v/.
It is painfully mediocre.
