Not really. Fates has more than enough concessions for newcomers that you don't need to play another game as training wheels. Fates is set in a different universe entirely, with minimal Awakening references. I'd still say yesbecause I'm one of the few /feg/gots who thinks Awakening is a fantastic game, but I wouldn't say it's required.
Just make sure you pick Birthright (the feudal Japan-based Hoshido version) first. The other version, Conquest, was intentionally made to be more difficult to appeal to hardcore Fire Emblem fans. It'll kick your ass if it's your first FE game, with less grinding opportunities, less money to go around, as well as more varied and strategic clear requirements.

Fates was my first Fire Emblem in a decade and I was pretty shocked to find out how much they 'localize' the games. I'm used to censorship but it seems like Treehouse is more into butcher knives than scalpels, what with all the random character name changes.
