I had a lot of fun with the customization, especially screwing around with my Avatar to make him a jack of all trades. Awakening casualized the series, but it broke its repetitiveness.

It's not that great of an SRPG. A lot of the maps are too wide open and empty and the win condition is usually killing all the enemies. Some of the mechanics are unbalanced and easily break the game. It does have some quality of life improvements over other FE games like the ability to completely skip lengthy Enemy Phase animations.

Fire Dragon was the hardest GBA Final Boss. Even Zephiel and Brunja are harder. Formortiis can at least take a hit from the legendary weapons.

To be fair, I found Zephiel pretty hard, actually. He'd double my Roy (I think? Maybe I'm confusing him with Medeus doubling my Marth), and in general he can do a fuckload of damage, especially with those reinforcements he can get.
I had a lot of trouble with that early-game Berserk, though. Fuck that shit. I didn't know that the character at the end of your roster was the one that the Berserk targets, so my healer was always the one getting shat on.

Yeah, FE8 isn't a game where you need to care about optimization even on Hard Mode (the only stage I had an issue with was... Chapter 21, was it? The level where you fight Riev for the first time), so using characters like the Trainees and Neimi and whatever the fuck is totally fine, especially since the Trainees eventually do get good stats. I used Innes in mine, paired him with Eirika, he's actually solid and not as bad as I expected, though he's still a Sniper. I also use Amelia, not because she's good, but because I need to give based Franz a girl and she's the only candidate. Also, nothin' wrong with having more Paladins.
