Since there's a third one coming out, I finally bought this and am currently downloading for a first-time playthrough. What should I know going into the game? Any mods I need to use?
>>
>What should I know going into the game?

You're going to pick the wrong skills and then have to restart halfway through

ss2tool (everything you need for game to just werk)
Vanilla is fine, but you can add some mods:
SCP beta 2 (community patch)
SHTUP ND (hi-res textures for said patch)
Tacticool Weapons Complete (Lore friendly HQ gun replacements)
Vurt's Flora/Goo/Eggs

You don't need any mods.
If you want a minor, but true-to-original facelift, look up the SHTUP Hi-Res textures, but nothing else.

Go NAVY first time around. Get some basic smallarms, hacking, research and maintenance skills. Bam, you can beat the game, and explore most of its features!

Remember to activate those respawn-stations and Med-beds on each deck. Enable the HUD minimap from the Inventory screen.

Wrench is your best friend for most of the game. Remember that you can READY it for a quick hit.

...oh, and one more thing:

If you got the game on Steam, or have installed the NewDark patch on your game in general, go to its root, find a file called "cam_ext.cfg". Open this up in Notepad and look for following line:

;d3d_disp_scaled_2d_overlay 64

REMOVE the ; -mark from the start of this line.
There you go, perfectly scaling HUD and fonts.

No need for anything. The Steam and GOG re-releases run and look good on modern systems, and the game has good art- and audio-design that create neat atmosphere at times. Just keep in mind that the game can be a bit challenging at the beginning.
Avoid those security cameras, and disable security systems whenever possible. Save ammo as often as possible.
>>
>>320322730
Speaking of SS2, I got butthurt when I hit the "backtrack your ass across the cargo hold and engineering areas", so really not that far into the game? Is it really worth picking up again? Not a huge horror game fan in the first place.
>>
>>320325713

I'd say it is worth it, I did a similar thing where I gave up for a while after getting to engineering, but then came back and it turned out to be one of my favorite games.

I played the game for the very first time in 2007, and it instantly became one of my top-10 favorite games. Hell, I replayed it right after the credits had rolled, and had a great time!

yeah wouldn't want to feel like you're trapped inside a working space ship or anything

game just werks (because ss2tool)
only thing i would recommend changing is this
>>320325092
because the UI will scale to resolution and make shit hard too read
also consider playing ss1 it's a better game imho fampai
>>
>>320322730
You really don't NEED any mods. They're mostly just niceties.

The only thing I recommend is going into cam-ext.cfg and enabling the UI scaling, because otherwise it will be unfuckingreadably tiny at high resolutions.
>>
>>320322730

Stop playing after the recreation deck - the game takes a massive dive in quality thereafter.
>>
>>320330113
Eh, while Command and Rickenbacker are weak, the end stuff is great.
>>
Are the people that made Infinite involved with this? I just found out about SS3 and I don't want those retards near it.

nope.

Not really. Most of the company rotated out since SS2.

And no, Irrational has nothing to do with SS3

Max out hacking and your wrench is your best friend until you get a decent amount of ammo.

Don't bother with the psionic stuff on your first playthrough.
>>
any advice on SS1?

first thing, how do i crouch?
>>
>>320322730
There is most definitely a "right" and "wrong" way to build your character's stats, but the game is totally beatable no matter which build you settle for. I would argue this just adds replay value, but some might just call it poor balance. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much.

Most enemies respawn. Your guns degrade REAL quick. Use melee if ever possible to conserve ammo.

On the topic of weapon degradation, the reason they degrade so quickly is because you're supposed to level up your maintenance skill to keep them from breaking. If you don't want to deal with that, there are also tons of weapon spawns lying around the game to keep you equipped with something. Don't listen to people who say this was outed by the devs as a glitch, they don't know what they're talking about.

All this management can be overwhelming, but it's all part of the SS2 experience.

You used to need a patching tool for the game to work, but recently a patch was released for the game (allegedly by a former developer) that comes included with most retail copies of the game. That includes Steam.

DON'T get that mod that replaces the NPC models, at least not for a first playthrough. They look awful and are still dated by today's standards. (I know they've been "updated" to look less shit, but they're still pretty shit.)

Or you could Get hacking high enough to hack security crates, then use any ICE picks you find on the high-security crates. I believe there are 1 more ICE picks in the game than there are high-security crates, so there's no reason to max out hacking save for the small bonus in the hacking minigame.

Get used to leaning.

open your map and select options so you can see enemies and camera's on your minimap

So ive got a question.

whats with this and which do i actually play
>>
>>320333013

Don't you have the enhanced edition? The classic version uses dosbox emulation so it can run pretty sluggishly
>>
>>320333013
Classic just runs in dosbox, play enhanced instead
>>
>>320333208
I do. I think it came with classic.

i wanted to play classic because I wasnt sure what changes "enhanced" implied

classic is just the original running on dosbox (daum might have some additional emulation fixes) floppy versions don't have voice files.
classic comes with EE so just play that instead
>>
>>320333356

Enhanced basically just means it runs better at higher resolutions, and you can choose to use mouselook.

It's meh at best. Seriously, why is this remembered like the 2nd coming of Christ?

Play Enhanced, otherwise expect an average FPS of like 20 or less

If you really want to use the old non-mouselook control scheme the original game used but still use Enhanced Edition, you open controls.cfg and uncomment the "set profile original" line and comment out the "set profile custom" line

The Floppy version is an odd release. It has only 320x200 resolution and no voice acting. The devs say they seriously regretted releasing the floppy version.
>>
>>320333448
>not using the original control sceme
I'm saving that for my second playthrough. I'm getting ready to nuke the reactor and the game feels a bit too easy by now.
>>
>>320333356
Enhanced does not really alter the game. It merely allows it to run at much higher framerates since it is direct running code instead of being DOS emulation (which Classic uses)

Most of what it adds is the fabled Mouselook and WASD control scheme, but the original DOS version was modded to have that as well and was adopted by many. You can use the original controls in the Enhanced Edition still if you want.

There's really no reason to play the Classic version over Enhanced.
>>
>>320333628
it's more than just a straight up shootan game and interesting setup/setting and characters moments etc an rpg game had never been done like that before
it's a far from perfect and shows it's age in a lot of ways too but its still good
>>320333802
i don't back kickstarters and i won't back this one
>>320333846
anything higher than 640x480 in dosbox will get frame drops no matter what
>>320334360
enhanced has a bug where the reactor code is the same each playthrough when it is supposed to be randomly generated
and apparently the final showdown with shodan is bugged and she can kill you instantly but maybe that was fixed.
>>
>>320327873
I mentioned backtracking because I found it obnoxious to have to literally go back to the place you passed by on your way from cargo to engineering to grab some bullshit you didn't know you needed. Beyond that I don't care.
>>
>>320334609
>and apparently the final showdown with shodan is bugged and she can kill you instantly but maybe that was fixed.
I read that was fixed. Dunno about the other one though. It was a bug in the DOS version too; it all had to do with the fact that the countdown for SHODAN taking you over wasn't frame limited. Since Enhanced Edition just maps the DOS code to Windows it had the same issue.

>>320334609

>final showdown with Shodan

I hope the SS1 remake will overhaul this. It was so overwhelming. So was Cyberspace in general really. They should make Cyberspace more detailed and play more like Descent.
