Man, my first Mario RPG was Paper Mario, I never even knew this game existed.
I saw these designs online many years ago and they fascinated me, I had to play it.
It's sad Nintendo will never give this kind of freedom to Mario devs that aren't Miyamoto ever again.
I wouldn't be surprised if this was the main reason Square Enix never got to make Mario RPG 2, Miyamoto's autism would fuck their shit up.

borrowed this game from a friend when I was a kid. he died from some lung disorder a week or two afterwards. played the shit out of this game, 100%'d it because of my old friend. good shit

Sticker star is not an "awful" game.
its well designed, it plays well, it has a lo of charm and style, the reason why it was so hated was because of PM1 and thousand year door were "great" games.
Many people tend to forget Paper Mario Wii so this kind of game was expected, a Paper Mario RPG but-not-quite kind of game

I do feel that all in all, while Sticker Star is overall crap compared to something like PM1 or TTYD, I least had fun. People expect for every game to be better than the last when overall its supposed to be a different experience. (I actually had alot of fun playing through Sticker Star without using Thing Stickers or using enemy weaknesses... but thats just me.)
I admit, I am biased towards PM1 since I never had the chance to own a SNES, only an NES and N64 as a kid. As such, I hold it higher than the other Paper Marios. I STILL enjoyed them, but maybe just not as much as the original.

It is up there, while it is probably one of my favorite games ever isn't perfect.
Square intentionally made it an introductory RPG in a Mario setting, as such the combat is pretty forgiving and there isn't as deep of a challenge as some other great RPGs,
also the isometric view is far from ideal for the platforming elements, and the game is just a little on the short side
