Damn good game, I don't even really like JRPGs or roguelikes but this really hit the sweet spot
Would love for a proper sequel. Or at least a remaster that touched up on it's imperfections.

This game scared the shit out of me with a form of mounting dread that creeps up on you. The way the theme music starts off all happy on the low floors and gets gradually more sinister as you move up the tower.
I've also never played a game that made me feel so out of my depth when biting off more than I could chew. Accidentally going up to a floor you're not prepared for where things kill you in one hit is scary shit.
I played the first couple Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games. They were the closest thing I've found, but hardly up to the quality of Azure Dreams.
How's Super Mystery Dungeon, by the way? Also, I hear Dark Cloud is somewhat similar but haven't played that either.
My favourite creature was the U-Boat.
That one time I hatched an egg and it was a U-Boat of my own was a glorious day.

I got it when it came out , purely out of not knowing wtf it was. Best decision ever. Such an under rated game.
I never beat this shit as a kid. I got a savefile from a friend who had a level 99 gold sword and diamond shield because they were the only weapons that didn't rust when stepping on those shit traps.Also when I emulated it a while ago I quicksaved at every elevator and reloaded the savefile when the floor was too hard. I effectively did a level 1 run by savescumming like a motherfucker since the endboss can't kill you no matter what.
I love Azure Dreams! I've probably spent thousands of hours between that game and Jade Cocoon.

I don't know about that. It's not fast, but it's certainly not the slowest roguelike I have played.
Hold down the skip buttons at all times and the game just flies by.

Only, at least in Shiren you couldn't become completely unkillable by combining your pokemon with the arachne or the block. Made the game pretty boring in the second half when your digimon killed everything in one hit or only took one damage from everything.
