Finished SC over the weekend. Fairly generic game all around and filled with many unenjoyable moments, but still worth the playthrough. Will be downloading Cold Steel to my PS3 the moment Sony decides to bother updating next tuesday.

Cold Steel assumes you know what Bracers are, it assumes you know what Ouroboros is and how they operate, it assumes you know what Crossbell is and why it's important, it assumes you know who Olivier is and what he's done, it assumes you know who Osbourne is, it assumes you know what orbal power is, etc.
If you haven't played previous games you'll be mostly lost. You'll also be playing a game that ends on a massive cliffhanger and will be waiting a year for the sequel when you could go and play FC and SC before touching Cold Steel to at the very least understand the basic concepts within the games.

Playing CS without Zero/Ao is ultimately OK, but not recommended, it's fine you'll manage. If Zero/Ao do release in the west, some things will be spoilt, but it will be at least 10 years before XSEED release them so it's not like CS will be fresh in your mind.
