So the GPU is behind the motherboard? That's a pretty unique packaging scheme, most of the riser cases I've seen just put the GPU off to the side making the case taller.
All of this will be easier once we start seeing APUs that are really capable of gaming, and AMD drivers that don't suck. Amazingly that isn't as far off as you might think.

Steam Machines run SteamOS which is a Linux distro optimized for console use, not too far removed from the PS4's BSD based OS except that we're still waiting for SteamOS's new Vulkan graphics API to be released. That said, I can't think of too many indie things or emulators that aren't available on SteamOS, though not all of them are available through Steam.
They have a desktop mode, but its Gnome 3 and its really only intended by Valve to let you install third party stuff which you can then add into the Big Picture mode interface. They figure if you want a desktop you'd be better off running a proper desktop distro.
