Hi /v/, I need some help building a computer. This is for a kid's birthday coming up. He's been gaming on a cheap laptop and I feel bad so I want to buy him a new gaming rig and a steam gift card.

I'd like it to be about ~1000 dollars. I don't game that much and I don't know much about parts and stuff, can someone help me pick out the parts?

Should be around $800-900, leaving some money on a steam gift card

The 970 is fine. The 3.5gb meme really doesn't matter.

kill yourself. burn your money in a fire pit too while you're at it
>>
>>320190884
I know you are lying. But seriously, go to newegg and look for any of the gaming pcs with an i7 6700 or 6700k. They run around that price and are high quality. Can downgrade to an i5 as long as it is gen y
>>
Some of you might be better suited than me.

I keep getting chrome crashes as recently as today, and a BSOD saying Memory management. I figure this is a RAM issue, but the windows diagnostic says no error. Any ideas?

Literally this. Best thing you can do for yourself (and the kid) is go to this website, it lists all the information in a nice table of price range and what the part is, and gives you totals for going straight across.
>>
Is it recommendable to buy a cheap GPU but better rest early to be able to upgrade the GPU later?
>>
>>320192356
The 970 is fine. In terms of actual performance playing actual video games, it is more than adequate. If the 3.5gb meme bothers you that much, get a 980 or whatever.
>>
>>320190884
What the fuck is that kid playing?
Seems stupid to spend 1000 when he's probably just going to play minecraft on it.
>>
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fyfC7P

Best bang for buck in that price range.
>>
>>320194157
Right now he plays a lot of tf2 he would like to play better games but his laptop can't really handle it

>>320190884
>>320191602
This is without checking for lower prices. The 280x is the more recent version of this card, but you're obviously not low on cash, and there are more expensive options like the GTX 970 or so.

The point is that an i5 and other really great specs are much cheaper than a lot of posts imply. A $350 (used prices) PC is playing a lot of games at 4k:

>DaSII at 4k60.
https://youtu.be/uZR-a35sxLg?t=12m56s
>GTA V at 4k30-60.
https://youtu.be/DH6FCgqQB_s?t=6m8s
>MGS V at 4k30.
https://youtu.be/hPq_nEskCiQ?t=4m56s
>>
>>320194382

Then you only need to spend 600. Once you start going above 800 dollars you should expect to max out any game at 40+ FPS.
>>
Are mobos compatible with i3 compatible with i5 and i7?
>>
>>320192356
Yeah, it's good. If you want to go with AMD, get an r9 390.

just because you can build a cheap PC that can outperform or at least match a console doesn't mean you should

if you're not poor then put in at least $1,200. computers are meant to be future proofed with parts that'll last you a few generations of games. having one that just barely meets the mark is dumb
>>
>>320194528

Yes, the i3, i5, and i7 use LGA1550, where as Skylake uses LGA1551.

>>
>>320194528
Yes, as long as the CPUs have the same sockets which they will if they're from the same generation of CPUs (Haswell, Sandy Bridge etc.).
For example, if you have an i3 3xxx CPU and a Z77 socket motherboard, you won't be able to fit an i3 4xxx CPU on it because the 4xxx series has a different socket (Z87).

People, gonna greentext here

>about to get second hand dualx 270x for 115€ shipped
>hear a random rumor, rush to amazon
>gtx 960 itx for 123 shipped, down from 204
>place the order

Assuming they even honor this order because muhwrongpricing, did I do wrong in assuming any 960 is still better than the 270x? I've always seen it at least benchmarked against the 280/280x so.
>>
>>320200571
yes
>>
>>320202249

So the dual-x 270 is better than the itx 960 given a near identical price?
>>
>>320200571
The 960 was supposed to compete with the 280, so yea its better
>>
>>320202387
yes
