I think the PS1 Crash games are mediocre. A series of solid platformers is brought down by unbelievably repetitive level design - once you've played the five-ish backdrops, you've pretty much played all the game has to offer. TWoC improved on the formula greatly by adding variety to the levels and their layouts, even to the gimmick levels where instead of the same gimmick level over and over it's the same kind of level but with a bit different style of play and an entirely different setting. That being said, the weakness in TWoC was having too many of those gimmick levels.
Also, there is nothing inherently wrong with memes. People who use "meme" as an insult have the minds of children or otherwise are children.

It's a combination of things. It's not a game that pulls me in with engaging gameplay, and is very similar to a VN but the story fails to keep me engaged as well. I always planned to play it through out of sheer curiosity to see how it ends, plus to see the differences between routes. I don't find the writing bad, and I LOVE the OST.
