You have to look at the historical context. Backwards compatible with all your PS1 games. Cheap dvd player. After just a year, a flood of big time 3rd parties were already on board.

Being able to emulate this well on a portable console was a first, not to mention the customization possibilities. You could even change system settings and get a better performance out of it.
