So I'm buddies with a Youtuber. He recently was lucky enough to have Nintendo fly him in and watch the Smash Direct early over the weekend, so they could see his reaction.
I'll be straight up and say, I can't get him to tell me who the characters are. He is under NDA, and he is being very cautious. However, some of the words he said did hint towards certain details of the direct.
First of all he told me he will not tell who the characters are. Note:

I know this should be obvious by now, but at the very least we can expect more than one character in this direct.
I tried to get ask him if he could give me clues about them. Didn't get too much out of him, but when asked

What do you think he means by this? Are we not getting characters from them as well?
Lastly, he wouldn't mention anything about the ballot, not even confirming if its talked about, although by answer my question, he used the words

This can mean nothing, but it could mean we are only getting a single ballot character out of this. So there you have it. Do not treat this as a leak, as I can't get solid answers out of him, but I did feel it would be nice to throw in a small bit of information so we can speculate the last hours before the direct.

On his channel he seemed to support Simon, Waluigi, and Shovel Knight to name a few.....but these shouldn't matter. He didn't support Cloud on his channel and was still very happy to have him in.

Sakurai admitted in a recent interview that the only reason Awakening got its reps was because Awakening happened to come out right when Sakurai was planning the roster and he was playing it at the time. He went on to say if it was just a few months later or earlier, Robin might not have been considered at all.
Getting into Smash isn't even about being a good game anymore, it's all a matter of having the right timing with your release.

Other "poor timing with releases" that led to characters not being in Smash:
