To a certain extent closed source is good. It provides direction, consistency, and legitimacy in releases. Dolphin had a pretty firm base to build off of, which admittedly CemU doesn't have yet.

I thought PCSX2 was mostly fine these days besides some minor issues that vary by game, like shadows being borked in DQ8 still.

It would certainly benefit them to start from square one to fix some deep rooted problems with the emulator but that'll never happen, and if it does it would take forever, but the vast majority of the PS2 library is playable just fine at this point.
