If you are playing the PS3 version. Press start, wait for the lame pseudo boot-up sequence, then read the menu for your current objective.
Its EXTREMELY confusing at first but just spam available attack buttons and wait for that reddish orange bar to meet the number of enemy tiers.
If it says there are seven waves of enemies, wait until there are seven bars (created from targeting enemies about to attack) before using song magic. If it says there are fourteen waves, build up fourteen bars.

I platinum it but it felt more like a Visual Novel than a Game. 1-2 easy battles followed by 3 hours of text. I played Tears to Tiara II right before it and that at least had fun battles between the walls of text.

You can't really dress them up in the PS3 version, because switching between costumes at will was something that was unlocked after you beat a bonus fight you got from transferring your prequel save (which remains unlocalized).
